Quick answer

Orion Dental Clinic in Greater Kailash Enclave 1, Delhi is a dentist for Defence Colony and South Extension, open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 am to 8:00 pm. Dr Anupam Sinha and Dr Natalia DeSilva explain dentures, bridges and implants after an examination. You can also choose to leave a gap.

01 Overview

How can a dentist near Defence Colony replace a missing tooth?

A missing tooth can make eating and speaking harder and can change how the face looks, and there are three main ways to replace one. Dentures are removable, and the NHS says they usually take a few weeks to make.1 A bridge is fixed in place by crowns on the neighbouring teeth, and in a review of 19 studies 89.1% of conventional bridges were still in place after ten years, although only 71.1% had no complication.2 An implant is a titanium post placed in the jaw, and a review of long-term studies found 94.6% still in place after 13.4 years on average.3

The studies measured different things in different groups of people, so these numbers are not a head-to-head comparison. Leaving the gap is also a choice, and the dentist can explain what a gap means for the teeth around it.

The clinic is in the basement of E 75, Greater Kailash Enclave 1, opposite Anubhav Play School, with the entrance at Gate 1. Defence Colony is roughly 3 km to the north on Wikipedia's coordinates, and South Extension roughly 3.6 km to the north-west. These are straight lines, not road distances, so allow for the real route.4 See our pages on dentures, dental bridges and dental implants for more.

Dentures, bridges and implants differ in how they are fixed, how long they last and what they need from your other teeth.

02 Candidacy

Which way of replacing a tooth might suit you?

The choice depends on your mouth, your health and your preferences, and the dentist will help you weigh them.

A fixed option may suit you if

  • You would like a tooth that stays in place without taking it out for cleaning.2
  • Your gums are healthy and any decay has been treated.3
  • You can attend regular check-ups, because decay and gum disease are the commonest reasons for bridge loss.2
  • You are prepared for several visits, and for surgery if you choose an implant.3

Wait or take extra care if

  • You have untreated gum disease or decay, which comes first.3
  • You would rather avoid surgery or shaping of the teeth either side, which points to dentures.12
  • You smoke or have a long-term condition, which the dentist will want to talk through before surgery.
  • You are not ready to decide, in which case leaving the gap for now is an option.

No one way of replacing a tooth suits everybody, so the choice is the one that fits your mouth and your plans.

03 Options

Which options for replacing teeth are there near Defence Colony?

Each option has a different balance of surgery, upkeep and fixed or removable teeth.

Dentures that you can remove

Removable false teeth that rest on the gums and may clip onto remaining teeth. They need no surgery and usually take a few weeks to make.1

Removable 1

A bridge fixed to neighbouring teeth

A false tooth joined to crowns on the teeth either side, which have to be shaped. In 19 studies 89.1% of conventional bridges were still in place at ten years, and 71.1% had no complication.2

89.1% at 10 years 2

An implant in the jaw

A titanium post that holds a crown, bridge or denture without shaping the neighbouring teeth. A review found 94.6% in place after 13.4 years on average.3

04 Procedure

What happens when you ask about a missing tooth, step by step?

Every plan is individual, so your steps may differ. This is the usual order.

A replacement is planned around your mouth first, and made only once the gums and teeth are healthy.

  1. Booking the visit

Call or message us on WhatsApp and tell us which tooth or teeth are missing. There is no form to fill in.

  2. Talking about the gap

The dentist asks how long the tooth has been missing, what bothers you about it, your health and your earlier dental work.

  3. Examining the mouth

The dentist checks the neighbouring teeth, gums and bite, and takes X-rays or other imaging where needed.

  4. Treating gums and decay first

Gum disease and decay are brought under control before any replacement is made.3

  5. Choosing an option

You compare dentures, a bridge, an implant and leaving the gap, with the figures, the upkeep and the number of visits each needs.123

  6. Making and fitting

A denture takes a few weeks to make, a bridge needs the neighbouring teeth to be shaped, and an implant is placed in the jaw and left to heal first.123

  7. Review

A review checks the fit and bite, and regular visits catch decay and gum problems early.

05 Aftercare

Looking after replaced teeth

Your dentist will give written instructions for your own replacement, and those come first.

Dentures

Clean them morning and evening with soft soap or washing-up liquid rather than toothpaste, take them out at night and keep them in water or a cleaning solution.1

Bridges

Clean under the false tooth every day with floss or interdental brushes, because decay and gum disease on the supporting teeth are the commonest reasons bridges are lost.2

Implants

Clean around the implant crown every day and keep to reviews, because gum disease can affect implants too.3

Check-ups

Keep regular check-ups so that a loose denture, a worn bridge or a sore gum is found early.

When to call us

Call the clinic on 098115 01995 if a denture, bridge or crown comes loose or breaks, or if a gum around it is sore or bleeding. If you have swelling that spreads across your face or neck, or trouble breathing or swallowing, call 112 or go to a hospital emergency department.

Replaced teeth need the same daily cleaning as natural ones, and regular checks.

06 Limits and risks

What are the limits of replacing teeth?

No replacement is as good as a healthy natural tooth, and the figures are averages. These are the limits:

  • Dentures can loosen as gums and jawbone change.
  • Bridges depend on the teeth either side, which are shaped to carry them.
  • Implants need surgery and a healing period.
  • The studies measured different things in different groups, so they cannot be lined up exactly.
  • Gum disease and decay have to be treated first.

In these cases a different option, a delayed start, or leaving the gap may be better.

Risks and complications

Bridges can fail and need the neighbouring teeth. Only 71.1% of conventional bridges had no complication at ten years, and the dentist will explain what shaping the teeth involves.2

Dentures can loosen. Poorly cleaned dentures can cause a sore mouth, and gums and bone change with age.1

Implants need surgery. The figure comes from implants that were followed up over many years, and the tissues around an implant can become inflamed.3

Averages are not promises. The figures describe groups of patients, so your dentist should explain what is likely for you.23

A good plan names these limits and matches the option to your mouth.

07 Your visit

What happens at your first appointment at Orion Dental Clinic?

At your first visit, a dentist at Orion Dental Clinic asks which teeth are missing, for how long, and what difficulty it causes. You are asked about your health, medicines and allergies, and any earlier dental work.

The dentist examines the gap, the neighbouring teeth, the gums and your bite, takes X-rays where needed, and talks through dentures, a bridge, an implant and leaving the gap. You can take your time to decide.

The first visit is for an examination and a plan, and nothing is started until you agree.

08 Why this clinic
