Ceramic braces · Greater Kailash 1, Delhi
Ceramic braces are the less obvious kind of fixed braces, and at Orion Dental Clinic, a dentist in Greater Kailash 1 (GK 1), South Delhi, they are planned by Dr Anupam Sinha, who holds a master's degree in orthodontics. This page covers how tooth-coloured braces work, whom they may suit, what to know about deep bites and removal, and what can go wrong, in plain language.
Treatment is planned by Dr Anupam Sinha (BDS, MDS), and Dr Natalia DeSilva (BDS, MDS) also sees patients at the clinic. For the wider picture, read our guide to braces treatment. Ask as many questions as you need before you decide.
These statements come from British Orthodontic Society and NHS patient information, listed at the end of the page. Your orthodontist will give the timeline for your own teeth.

Quick answer
Ceramic braces at Orion Dental Clinic in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi use tooth-coloured brackets, so they are less obvious than metal ones. Dr Anupam Sinha plans each case after an examination and records. They can move teeth as well as metal braces, take 18 to 24 months and are followed by a retainer.
01 Overview
Ceramic braces work in the same way as metal braces. A bracket is bonded to each tooth and a wire runs through the brackets, and the gentle force of the wire moves the teeth over time. The difference is that the brackets are made of a hard, tooth-coloured ceramic instead of stainless steel, and the wire can also be tooth-coloured, so the appliance blends in with the teeth.1
That makes them more aesthetic and popular with adults, and the British Orthodontic Society says ceramic fixed appliances can be as effective as conventional ones at moving teeth.1 The trade-offs are that ceramic brackets are slightly harder to remove at the end, although they are unlikely to damage healthy teeth in most cases, and that they are sometimes not recommended for the lower teeth if the bite is deep.1
If strength matters most to you, read about metal braces. If you would like a clip that holds the wire in place of elastics, ceramic versions of self-ligating braces also exist, and our page on braces for adults explains what to expect at an older age.
Ceramic braces trade some of the robustness of metal for a much less visible appliance.
02 Candidacy
Ceramic braces are used for the same problems as other fixed braces, and they are popular with adults.1 The orthodontist decides after an examination and records, and checks your bite before recommending them.
Whether ceramic braces suit you depends mostly on your bite and on how much the appearance matters to you.
03 Options
Ceramic is a choice of bracket material, and it can be combined with different wires and ways of holding them.
The brackets are tooth-coloured and the wire is the usual metal one, which is visible between the brackets but thin.
Tooth-coloured brackets 1
The wire is tooth-coloured as well, so that the whole appliance is harder to see.1
Most discreet fixed option 1
A clip holds the wire, so there are no elastics to discolour, and wire changes can be quicker. There is no evidence that this gives a better result.1 See self-ligating braces.
Clip instead of elastics 1
If you are unsure between types, compare with lingual braces, which sit behind the teeth, and clear aligners, which are removable trays.
| Ceramic | Metal | Lingual | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it looks | Tooth-coloured brackets | Silver brackets | Hidden behind the teeth |
| Main advantage | More discreet, and as effective as metal 1 | Robust 1 | Cannot be seen 1 |
| At removal | Slightly harder to remove, and unlikely to damage healthy teeth in most cases 1 | Can be removed, leaving the teeth intact 1 | Ask your orthodontist |
| Main drawback | Sometimes not advised for lower teeth in a deep bite 1 | Visible, and elastics can stain 1 | Speech and tongue problems at first, and harder cleaning 1 |
The right choice balances how discreet you want the braces to be against your bite and how much wear they must take.
04 Procedure
Every case is planned individually, so your steps may differ. This is the usual order for ceramic braces.12
Ceramic braces follow the same path as metal ones, with extra attention to the bite and to gentle removal.
The orthodontist asks about your health and what you would like to change, examines your teeth, gums and bite, and takes X-rays, photographs or scans to plan the treatment.2
The orthodontist checks how the upper and lower teeth meet. Ceramic brackets are sometimes not recommended for the lower teeth if the bite is deep, and you will be told if that applies to you.1
Decay and gum problems are treated first. Then a tooth-coloured ceramic bracket is bonded to each tooth, and a wire, which can also be tooth-coloured, is placed in the brackets.1
You come back every six to eight weeks to have the wire adjusted.2 The wire changes as treatment progresses, and fixed braces usually stay on for 18 to 24 months.1
At the end the brackets are removed. Ceramic ones are slightly harder to remove than metal, but they are unlikely to damage healthy teeth in most cases.1 Tell the orthodontist about any concern before removal.
Removing the leftover glue can roughen the enamel and take a thin layer from it, whatever the type of bracket. A review of 41 papers found that multi-step polishing with discs and pumice was the most predictable way to leave the enamel smooth.4
All fixed appliance treatment is followed by retention, so you are given retainers and told how long to wear them.1
05 Aftercare
Your orthodontist will give you written advice for your braces, and that comes first. These are the basics from NHS patient information.2
Teeth can be sore for a few days after the braces are fitted and after adjustments. Soft food and pain relief taken as directed may help.2
Brush with fluoride toothpaste in the morning, at night and after meals, and use an interdental brush every day between the teeth and under the braces.2
Cut back on sugary food and drink, avoid hard, crunchy and sticky food that can break the braces, cut food into smaller pieces and do not chew gum.2
Ring the clinic. Brackets coming off is common enough in studies that it is worth repairing early.5
Ring the clinic on 098115 01995 if a ceramic bracket chips or comes off, if a wire pokes into your cheek, or if your gums are sore and swollen. A chipped bracket can have a sharp edge, so cover it with wax until you are seen. For swelling that spreads across your face or neck, or trouble breathing or swallowing, go to a hospital emergency department.
Clean around every bracket, mind your food and call early if a bracket comes off.
06 Limits and risks
Ceramic braces suit many people, but not in every case. These are situations where your orthodontist may suggest metal braces or another type, or delay treatment:
In these cases metal braces, lingual braces or clear aligners may be better, or treatment may start after the teeth and gums have been treated.
Brackets can come off. A review of 17 studies found that between 0.6 and 28.3 percent of brackets came off during treatment, across all types of bracket. Almost all the studies had a high risk of bias, and the authors call the incidence high.5 These figures are not specific to ceramic brackets.
Removal and the enamel. Ceramic brackets are slightly harder to remove than metal ones.1 Removing leftover glue can roughen and thin the enamel with any bracket, which is why careful polishing matters.4
Decay and gum problems. Food and plaque collect around brackets, so sugary food and drink can lead to decay, and gums can become red, swollen and painful if the teeth are not kept clean.2
Teeth can move back. All fixed appliance treatment is followed by retention, because teeth tend to return towards their old position without it.1
A good plan names these risks before treatment starts, and gentle removal and a retainer protect the result.
07 Your visit
At your first visit, a dentist at Orion Dental Clinic asks why you are thinking about tooth-coloured braces, and about your health, medicines, allergies and earlier dental treatment. Tell us if you have a deep bite, because ceramic brackets are sometimes not advised for the lower teeth in that case.
The orthodontist examines your teeth, gums and bite and may take X-rays, photographs or scans. You then compare ceramic braces with metal braces, lingual braces and clear aligners for your own mouth, including how visible each would be, how long it takes and what the risks are.
The first visit shows whether ceramic brackets suit your bite before you commit.

The British Orthodontic Society says ceramic fixed appliances can be as effective as conventional fixed appliances at achieving tooth movement.1
They are much less obvious than metal braces because the brackets match the colour of the teeth, and a tooth-coloured wire reduces what shows further.1 They can still be noticed up close.
The British Orthodontic Society says they are sometimes not recommended for the lower teeth if the bite is deep.1 Your orthodontist checks how your teeth meet before advising.
