Quick answer

Bleeding gums treatment at Orion Dental Clinic in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi starts with finding the cause, which is usually plaque, and then better home cleaning and professional cleaning. Dr Anupam Sinha and Dr Natalia DeSilva check whether it is early gum inflammation or gum disease. Bleeding that does not settle, or comes with loose teeth, needs an examination.

01 Overview

Why do gums bleed, and how is it treated in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi?

Gums that bleed when you brush, floss or eat hard foods such as apples are a sign of gum disease, and the cause is a build-up of plaque on the teeth. If plaque is not removed by brushing and cleaning between the teeth, it irritates the gums.1 Smoking increases the risk.1

Most bleeding comes from plaque-induced gingivitis, the early stage, and clinical gum health can be restored after treatment.2 Some gum conditions are not caused by plaque and usually do not resolve after plaque is removed, and may be a sign of a condition elsewhere in the body.2 That is why persistent bleeding is examined and not only cleaned.

Treatment starts with advice on cleaning, which may include interdental brushes, help to stop smoking, and cleaning by a hygienist.1 If the examination shows loss of support around the teeth, the plan moves to the steps described on our gum disease treatment page, and cleaning below the gum is explained on our deep cleaning page.

Bleeding gums are a warning sign, and the usual answer is better cleaning, with an examination to rule out more.

02 Candidacy

Who needs bleeding gums treatment in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi?

Anyone whose gums bleed regularly should have them checked, and the NHS gives these guides on when to see a dentist.1

When to see a dentist

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or when you eat hard foods.1
  • Gums that are painful or swollen, or bad breath that does not go away.1
  • A child with sore, bleeding gums.1
  • Gums that are very sore and swollen, loose or falling-out teeth, ulcers or red patches, or a lump, which need urgent attention.1

Factors that can make it worse

  • Plaque that is not removed from the teeth and between them every day.1
  • Smoking, which increases the risk of gum disease.1
  • Pregnancy or type 2 diabetes, for which the NHS advises regular check-ups.1
  • Other conditions that change the gums and do not respond to cleaning alone.2

Bleeding is common, but it is a reason for an examination and not something to ignore.

03 Options

Which bleeding gums treatment options are there in Greater Kailash 1?

The research looks at home cleaning, professional cleaning and what to do when the bleeding comes from gum disease.

Better cleaning at home for bleeding gums

Brush with fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day and spit without rinsing, clean between the teeth daily, and do not use mouthwash straight after brushing.1 In 35 trials, floss may reduce gingivitis at one month, and interdental brushes may be more effective than floss, but the evidence is low-certainty and the effects may be small.3

Low-certainty evidence 3

Professional cleaning

A scale and polish removes deposits and stains. In healthy adults it reduced calculus, but made little or no difference to gingivitis over two to three years, and the benefits for people with gum disease were not studied.4

Less calculus 4

Treatment for gum disease

If bleeding comes with pockets and loss of support, the guideline sets out cleaning below the gum and further steps.5

Stepwise plan 5

If you are pregnant or have type 2 diabetes, the NHS advises regular check-ups with a dentist and hygienist.1

04 Procedure

How are bleeding gums checked and treated, step by step?

Every case is individual, so your steps may differ. This is the usual order.

The check is as important as the clean, because it tells you whether this is early or established gum disease.

  1. Questions about your bleeding gums

The dentist asks when the bleeding happens, how long it has gone on, how you clean your teeth, whether you smoke, and about pregnancy, diabetes and your medicines.1

  2. Examining the gums

The dentist looks at the colour and swelling of the gums, measures the pockets around the teeth with a probe, and takes X-rays where needed to see the bone.

  3. Finding the cause of the bleeding

Most bleeding comes from plaque, but the dentist also looks for signs of a condition that is not caused by plaque and will not clear with cleaning alone.2

  4. Professional cleaning

Plaque and hard deposits are removed above the gum, and areas that hold plaque are dealt with, which the guideline recommends as part of the first step.5

  5. Teaching home cleaning

You are shown how to brush the gum edges and how to use floss or interdental brushes for your own gaps.13

  6. Re-checking the gums

After a short time the dentist looks again to see whether the bleeding has settled. If it has not, or if pockets are found, the plan moves to treatment for gum disease.5

  7. Regular check-ups

Regular visits to a dentist and hygienist keep the gums healthy, especially if you are pregnant or have type 2 diabetes.1

05 Aftercare

Looking after bleeding gums in Greater Kailash 1: home care

Your dentist will give you written instructions, and those come first. These are the basics from the NHS.1

Brushing

Brush with fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day, and spit out the toothpaste without rinsing.1

Between the teeth

Clean between your teeth every day with floss or interdental brushes.1 Interdental brushes may reduce gingivitis more than floss, although the evidence is low-certainty.3

Mouthwash and smoking

Do not use mouthwash straight after brushing, and do not smoke.1

Keep going and get it checked

Bleeding is a sign of inflamed gums, so keep cleaning gently, and see a dentist if it does not improve.1

When to call us

Call the clinic on 098115 01995 if your gums are very sore and swollen, if a tooth feels loose, if you see ulcers or red patches in the mouth, or a lump in the mouth or on the lip, or if bleeding is heavy or does not stop. If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, or swelling that spreads across your face or neck, call 112 or go to a hospital emergency department.

Clean thoroughly and gently every day, and do not wait if the bleeding does not settle.

06 Limits and risks

When is cleaning not enough for bleeding gums?

Better cleaning settles most gum bleeding, but it does not work for every cause. These are situations where more is needed:

  • Bleeding that does not settle despite careful cleaning.
  • Pockets or loss of support around the teeth, which means gum disease.
  • Gums that are red, swollen or altered in a way that plaque does not explain.
  • Smoking that continues.
  • Loose teeth, ulcers, red patches or a lump, which need urgent attention.

In these cases an examination, treatment for gum disease or a referral may be needed.

Risks and complications

The evidence for devices is weak. In 35 trials the evidence on floss and interdental devices was low to very low certainty, outcomes were mostly short-term and most participants had little gum inflammation to begin with, so the effects may not be clinically important.3

A scale and polish is not a treatment for gum bleeding on its own. In healthy adults without severe gum disease it made little or no difference to gingivitis over two to three years, and adverse effects were not assessed.4

Gum disease can hide behind bleeding. A person with periodontitis needs the stepwise treatment, and after treatment remains at increased risk of it returning.25

Not every gum problem is plaque. Conditions that are not caused by plaque usually do not resolve once plaque is removed.2

A good plan names these limits and re-checks the gums so that nothing is missed.

07 Your visit

What happens at your first bleeding gums appointment?

At your first visit, a dentist at Orion Dental Clinic looks at how you clean your teeth and where the gums bleed, and asks about your health, medicines, smoking, pregnancy and diabetes.

The dentist measures the pockets around each tooth, takes X-rays where needed and explains what cleaning you need at the clinic and at home, how many visits it may take, and when the gums should be checked again. Cleaning is done only with your agreement.

The first visit is for a plan, and cleaning is done only with your agreement.

12 Questions

Bleeding gums questions patients ask in Greater Kailash 1

Why do my gums bleed when I brush?

Usually because plaque has built up on the teeth and irritated the gums. Gum disease makes the gums red, swollen and sore, and they may bleed when you brush, floss or eat hard foods.1

Should I stop brushing if my gums bleed?

No. Bleeding is a sign of inflamed gums, so keep cleaning gently, brush the gum edges, and see a dentist if it does not improve.1

Is floss or an interdental brush better?

In a Cochrane review of 35 trials, floss may reduce gingivitis, and interdental brushes may be more effective than floss, but the evidence is low-certainty and the effects may be small.3

Does a scale and polish stop bleeding?

In healthy adults without severe gum disease, routine scale and polish made little or no difference to gingivitis over two to three years, though it reduced calculus.4

Can bleeding gums be reversed?

Plaque-induced gingivitis can be returned to health with treatment.2 If it has become periodontitis, the stepwise treatment controls it, but it can return.25

When are bleeding gums urgent?

When the gums are very sore and swollen with loose or falling-out teeth, or there are ulcers, red patches or a lump in the mouth or on the lip.1

Does smoking affect bleeding gums?

Smoking increases the risk of gum disease, and the NHS advises stopping.1

Are bleeding gums more likely in pregnancy or diabetes?

The NHS advises regular check-ups for people who are pregnant or have type 2 diabetes.1
