Quick answer

Dentures at Orion Dental Clinic in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi are removable false teeth, complete for a whole jaw or partial for some missing teeth. Dr Anupam Sinha and Dr Natalia DeSilva plan them after an examination. They usually take a few weeks to make, and it takes a few weeks to get used to them.

01 Overview

What are dentures, and how do they work in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi?

Dentures are false teeth used to replace missing teeth. They sit over the gums, and some types also clip onto any teeth that remain. Complete dentures replace all the upper or lower teeth, and partial dentures replace one or more missing teeth.1 Because they can be taken out, they are cleaned out of the mouth and left out at night.

To make dentures, the dentist takes a mould, usually with putty and sometimes with a scan. It usually takes a few weeks for dentures to be made, and you are given another appointment for the fitting.1 Immediate dentures can be made within a few days, for example when teeth have just been taken out, but they often need adjusting or replacing up to a year later, because the mouth changes as it heals.1

Dentures are not the only way to replace teeth. The NHS lists bridges, which are fixed to neighbouring teeth, and dental implants, which are fixed to the jawbone and can support crowns or some types of dentures.1 Our page on dental bridges covers the first, and our page on dental implants covers the second.

Dentures are the simplest way to replace many teeth, and they need time to get used to and careful daily cleaning.

02 Candidacy

Who needs dentures in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi?

Dentures suit people who have lost, or need to have removed, one or more teeth, or all the teeth in a jaw.1 The dentist decides after an examination.

When dentures are usually advised

  • Someone who needs teeth removed, or has one or more missing teeth.1
  • Someone who has lost all the upper or lower teeth, who may need complete dentures.1
  • Someone who would like a removable replacement without surgery.
  • Someone with difficulty eating or speaking, or who is unhappy with how missing teeth look.1

When another plan may be needed

  • Someone who wants a fixed replacement, who may prefer a bridge or implants.1
  • Someone whose lower denture is loose because the lower jaw has shrunk, who may benefit from a denture held by two implants.23
  • Someone with sore gums or a mouth infection that has to be treated first.1
  • Someone who finds it hard to clean a removable appliance every day.1

Dentures suit many people, and a loose lower denture is the case where implants help most.

03 Options

Which denture options are there in Greater Kailash 1?

Dentures can be complete or partial, held by the gums or by implants, and the research looks at the difference.

Complete dentures

A full set of false teeth for the upper or lower jaw, resting on the gums.1

All upper or lower teeth 1

Partial dentures

False teeth for one or more missing teeth, which may clip onto remaining teeth.1 In 8 studies, between 1.1% and 36.7% of partial denture wearers had denture stomatitis, a sore, red mouth under the denture.4

For some teeth 1

Implant-retained dentures

A lower denture held by two implants gave better comfort, stability, speech, chewing and satisfaction than a conventional lower denture.2 The benefit in chewing was greatest for people with a very resorbed lower jaw or difficulty with ordinary dentures.3

Better comfort 2

Fixed options, which avoid a removable appliance, are bridges and full mouth dental implants.

A well-fitting denture suits most people, and implants can help where a lower denture will not stay put.

04 Procedure

How are dentures made and fitted, step by step?

Every case is individual, so your steps may differ. This is the usual order.1

Dentures take several visits, and the adjustments after fitting are part of the treatment.

  1. Examination for dentures

The dentist examines your mouth, gums and any remaining teeth, and talks to you about what you want from your teeth.

  2. Treating the mouth first

Decay, gum disease and infections are treated, and teeth that cannot be saved are taken out. Gums need time to heal before dentures that last are made.

  3. Taking a mould for the dentures

The dentist takes a mould of your gums and any remaining teeth, usually with putty and sometimes with a scan.1

  4. Trying in the denture teeth

The shade and shape of the teeth and your bite are checked before the dentures are finished, so that they look right and fit together.

  5. Making the dentures

A laboratory makes the dentures, which usually takes a few weeks.1 Immediate dentures can be made within days.1

  6. Fitting the dentures

At the fitting the dentures are checked and adjusted. You learn to put them in and take them out.

  7. Adjusting and reviewing the dentures

Soreness spots are adjusted at review visits. Dentures that clink when you talk, slip or no longer fit should be checked.1

05 Aftercare

Looking after dentures in Greater Kailash 1: care and cleaning

Your dentist will give you written instructions, and those come first. These are the basics from the NHS.1

Getting used to them

It can take a few weeks to get used to wearing dentures. Practise putting them in and taking them out, and eat softer foods at first.1

Cleaning the dentures

Brush the dentures morning and evening with soft soap or washing-up liquid, over water or a soft towel, and rinse them after meals. Do not use toothpaste, which could damage them.1

Cleaning your mouth

Brush your gums, tongue and any remaining teeth with fluoride toothpaste morning and evening.1

At night

Take the dentures out every night and keep them in water, an overnight cleaning solution or a denture bath. Do not wear them overnight unless your dentist advises it, because of gum infection, decay and choking risks.1

When to call us

Call the clinic on 098115 01995 if your dentures click when you talk, slip or no longer fit, if they cause pain or are cracked or broken (bring any pieces), or if your gums are very red or bleeding or your breath is bad, because this may be gum disease, a fungal infection or decay. If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, or swelling that spreads across your face or neck, call 112 or go to a hospital emergency department.

Clean the dentures and the mouth every day, take them out at night and have them checked if they stop fitting.

06 Limits and risks

When are dentures not the right choice?

Dentures suit many people, but they are removable and they change as the mouth changes. These are situations where another plan may be better:

  • A wish for a fixed replacement.
  • A lower denture that will not stay in place because the lower jaw has shrunk.
  • A mouth with gum disease or infection that has not been treated.
  • Difficulty cleaning and handling a removable appliance.
  • One missing tooth with healthy neighbours, which a bridge or an implant may replace.

In these cases a bridge, an implant, a denture held by implants or treatment of the mouth first may be better.

Risks and complications

Dentures can loosen. Gums and jawbone shrink or change with age, which can leave dentures loose, and dentures can wear or become damaged.1 Immediate dentures often need to be adjusted or replaced up to a year later.1

Sore mouth and infection. Poorly cleaned or unadjusted dentures can cause a sore mouth and infections.1 Denture stomatitis was found in 1.1% to 36.7% of partial denture wearers in 8 studies, with an association, though not a proven cause.4 Disinfection, antiseptic mouthwash and antifungal medicines were all options for treating it.5

Eating and speaking. Dentures that do not fit, or that have not been adjusted, can make eating and speaking difficult.1

Limits of implants for dentures. In a review, objective benefit in chewing from implant-supported or retained dentures was limited to a lower overdenture for people with a very resorbed lower jaw or difficulty adapting to ordinary dentures.3

A good plan names these limits before treatment starts, and treats the adjustments and cleaning as part of the denture.

07 Your visit

What happens at your first dentures appointment?

At your first visit, a dentist at Orion Dental Clinic asks which teeth are missing, how you manage now and what you would like from dentures. You are asked about your health, medicines and allergies, and whether you have worn dentures before. Please bring your old dentures if you have them.

The dentist examines your mouth, gums and any remaining teeth, and takes X-rays where needed. You then talk through the types of denture, any treatment that has to come first, how long it takes and what the alternatives are, including bridges and implants, and you can take your time to decide.

The first visit is for questions and a plan, and nothing is removed or made until you agree.
