Quick answer

Dental implants at Orion Dental Clinic in Greater Kailash 1 (GK 1), Delhi replace missing teeth with small titanium posts placed in the jaw, topped with a crown, bridge or denture. Dr Anupam Sinha and Dr Natalia DeSilva plan each case after an examination and imaging. Treatment usually takes six to twelve months in total.

01 Overview

What are dental implants, and how do they work in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi?

A dental implant is a small post, usually made of titanium, that a dentist places in the jawbone where a tooth is missing. Over the following months the bone grows against the metal and holds it firmly. This process is called osseointegration. When the post is steady, a custom-made crown, bridge or denture is fixed to it, so the new tooth can be used for biting and chewing much like a natural one.3

Most people compare an implant with two other ways to replace a tooth. A fixed bridge joins a false tooth to the teeth on either side, so those healthy teeth have to be shaped to carry it. A removable denture rests on the gums and can move when you eat or speak. An implant replaces the missing root, so it does not depend on the neighbouring teeth. You can read about dental bridges and dentures on their own pages.

Why replace a missing tooth at all? When a tooth is lost, the bone that held its root slowly shrinks, and nearby teeth can drift into the gap. That can change your bite, make chewing harder and alter how your face looks. Replacing the tooth, with an implant or another method, helps to prevent this. Our page on missing teeth explains the causes and the choices.

An implant replaces the root as well as the crown, which is why it is planned around your bone and gums, not only around your smile.

02 Candidacy

Who can get dental implants in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi?

Implants suit many adults who have lost one or more teeth, but not everyone, and not always straight away. Your dentist decides after an examination and imaging, and may suggest treating other problems first.3

Who an implant usually suits

  • Adults whose jaw has finished growing and who are missing one tooth or several.
  • People with enough healthy jawbone, or who are willing to have a bone graft first.3
  • People who keep their teeth and gums clean and attend regular check-ups.3
  • People who are fit enough for minor oral surgery and whose health conditions are under control.

Who needs extra care or a different plan

  • Smokers. Smoking raises the chance that an implant does not bond, and NHS guidance asks patients to stop at least six months before treatment.3
  • People with gum disease that has not been treated. Gum treatment comes first.3
  • People with health conditions or medicines that affect healing. Tell your dentist about every condition and medicine you take.4
  • Children and teenagers whose jaws are still growing.

Being a good candidate depends on your bone, your gums and your general health, not on your age alone.

03 Options

Which dental implant options are available in Greater Kailash 1?

The right option depends on how many teeth are missing and where they are. These are the three most common choices.

Single tooth implant

One implant and one crown replace one missing tooth. The neighbouring teeth are left alone. Read more on the single tooth implant page.

Healing about 3 to 6 months, then the crown 3

Implant-supported bridge

Two or more implants carry a bridge that replaces several teeth in a row, so there does not have to be one implant for every missing tooth. See implant bridge.

Same healing time, then a longer crown stage

Full arch of fixed teeth

A fixed set of teeth on four to six implants, such as All-on-4 or All-on-6, for people who have lost most or all of the teeth in one jaw. See also full mouth dental implants.

Planned for each person, often longer

Some implants can be placed on the day a tooth is removed, when the bone and gum allow it. This is called immediate placement, and your dentist will tell you whether it suits your mouth. More on immediate implants.

The number of missing teeth and the condition of your bone decide which option fits.

04 Procedure

How is a dental implant placed, step by step?

Every case is planned individually, so your steps may differ. This is the usual order.34

Most of the time is spent waiting for bone to heal, not in the dental chair.

  1. Examination and imaging for your tooth implant

The dentist asks about your health and medicines, examines your teeth and gums, and takes X-rays or a 3D scan where needed. These show how much bone you have, and where nerves and sinuses lie.

  2. Treating other problems first

Gum disease, decay or an infected tooth are treated before the implant, so that the area is healthy. A tooth that cannot be saved may be taken out at this stage, which is a tooth extraction.

  3. A bone graft, if the jaw is thin

If there is not enough bone to hold the post, a bone graft may be done first. NHS patient information says this can add at least four months to treatment, and that it can bring swelling, bruising and pain.34

  4. Implant surgery

The area is numbed with a local anaesthetic. The dentist prepares a space in the bone, places the titanium post and closes the gum over it or fits a small healing cap. Ask about sedation dentistry if you are anxious.

  5. Healing and osseointegration

The bone now bonds to the post. This usually takes three to six months, longer if a graft was needed.3 You are given written care instructions, and a temporary tooth may be possible while you wait.

  6. Fitting the implant crown

When the post is firm, the dentist attaches a connector called an abutment and takes impressions. The implant crown, bridge or denture is made to match your bite and your neighbouring teeth, then checked and fitted.

  7. Reviews and long-term care

NHS guidance advises monitoring every three to six months over the long term.3 Your dentist checks the gums around the implant, the bite and the crown, and shows you how to clean them.

05 Aftercare

Recovery after dental implant surgery in Greater Kailash 1

Recovery has four phases. Your dentist will give you written instructions that fit your treatment, and those come first.

The first 48 hours

Some bleeding, swelling and discomfort are common.3 Keep the area clean, eat soft, cool food, rest, and take your medicines exactly as prescribed. Do not smoke.

The first week

Swelling and bruising settle. Avoid chewing on the site, rinse gently if you are told to, and keep any follow-up visit for stitches or a check.

Weeks 2 to 12

The implant is bonding to the bone. Brush as normal, use the cleaning aids your dentist shows you, keep your review visits and stay away from tobacco.

Long term

Brush twice a day, clean around the implant with interdental brushes and attend check-ups, which NHS guidance puts at every three to six months.3

When to call us

Call the clinic on 098115 01995 the same day if you have bleeding that does not stop after 20 minutes of firm pressure on gauze, swelling that is still growing after the third day, a fever, pus or a bad taste, severe pain that your medicines do not control, an implant or crown that feels loose, or numbness or tingling in the lip, chin or tongue that does not go away. If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, or swelling that spreads towards your eye or neck, go to a hospital emergency department.

Follow your written instructions, keep the area clean and call early if something feels wrong.

06 Limits and risks

When are dental implants not the right choice?

An implant is surgery, and it does not suit everyone. A good dentist is willing to say no, or to wait. These are situations where your dentist may advise a different option, a delay, or advice from your other doctors:

  • Gum disease that has not been treated.
  • Not enough jawbone, when a bone graft is not suitable or not wanted.
  • Smoking, if you are not ready to stop.
  • Health conditions that are not under control, or medicines that affect bone healing.
  • Radiotherapy to the jaw in the past.
  • Teeth grinding that is not controlled, because it can overload the implant.
  • A jaw that is still growing.

In these cases a fixed bridge or a denture may be the better first step, or implant treatment may begin after another problem has been treated.

Risks and complications

An implant may not bond. A systematic review of 23 studies, covering 7,711 implants followed for 13.4 years on average, found that 94.6 percent were still in place.1 That means roughly five or six in every hundred were lost in that time. NHS guidance describes a small risk that an implant does not join the bone and has to be removed, higher in smokers.4

The gum around the implant can become infected. A systematic review of 11 studies found that on average 43 percent of patients had inflamed gum around an implant (peri-implant mucositis) and 22 percent had the more serious form that destroys bone (peri-implantitis), with wide differences between studies.2 Inadequate cleaning can lead to long-term bone loss.3

Surgery has its own risks. Swelling, bruising and discomfort are common for a few days, and infection can occur. Altered feeling or numbness in the lip or chin is very rare and usually settles.3 A bone graft can add swelling, bruising and pain.4

Parts can wear or loosen. The screw or the crown can loosen or wear with time and may need repair or replacement.4

A good plan names these risks before treatment starts, and a good clinic keeps checking the implant for years afterwards.

07 Your visit

What happens at your first dental implant visit?

At your first visit, a dentist at Orion Dental Clinic asks about the missing tooth, how long ago it was lost and what bothers you most. You are asked about your general health, medicines, allergies and smoking, so please bring a list of your medicines and any recent reports.

The dentist examines your teeth, gums and bite and, where needed, takes X-rays or a 3D scan to look at your jawbone. You then talk through the options, including leaving things as they are and other ways to replace the tooth, with the benefits, risks and time that each involves. You can ask for anything to be explained again, and you can take time to decide.

The first visit is for questions and a plan, not for surgery.

12 Travelling patients

Travelling to Delhi for dental implants?

Implant treatment takes several months because the bone needs time to bond with the implant, so people who live outside Delhi usually plan it in stages: a first conversation or evaluation, a visit for surgery, a healing period at home, and a return visit to fit the crown.34

Tell us where you live and how much time you can spend in Delhi, and we will explain what can be done on a short visit and what has to wait. You can read how dental tourism in Delhi works, or go straight to our page for international patients having dental implants. Our main dental tourism page lists every guide.

Plan implants as a staged treatment over months, not a single trip, unless your dentist advises otherwise.

13 Questions

Dental implant questions patients ask in Greater Kailash 1

How long do dental implants last?

Many implants last for many years. In a systematic review of studies that followed patients for at least ten years, 94.6 percent of implants were still in place after 13.4 years on average.1 How long yours lasts depends on how well it is cleaned, the health of your gums, whether you smoke, and regular check-ups.

Is dental implant surgery painful?

The area is numbed with a local anaesthetic, and the aim is that you feel no pain during the procedure. Afterwards, swelling, bruising and some discomfort are normal for a few days.3 Your dentist will tell you how to manage this. If you are anxious, ask about sedation dentistry or read about dental anxiety.

How long does the whole treatment take?

NHS guidance says the whole process could take 6 to 12 months,4 with three to six months of healing before the crown is fitted.3 A bone graft adds at least four months.3 Your dentist will give you a timeline for your own mouth.

Who should not have a dental implant?

People with untreated gum disease, too little bone, uncontrolled health conditions, or who smoke and are not ready to stop may be advised to wait or to choose another option. Children whose jaws are still growing should wait too. The section on when implants are not the right choice lists these situations.

Do I need a bone graft?

Only if there is not enough bone to hold the implant firmly. X-rays or a 3D scan show how much bone you have. A graft adds healing time and has its own risks of swelling, bruising and pain.34

Can a dental implant fail?

Yes. A small number of implants do not bond to the bone and have to be removed, and the risk is higher in smokers.4 The gum around an implant can also become inflamed or infected, which is why cleaning and regular check-ups matter.2

How do I look after a dental implant?

Brush twice a day, clean around the implant with interdental brushes or the aids your dentist recommends, avoid smoking, and attend check-ups. NHS guidance advises monitoring every three to six months over the long term.3
