Smile designing · Greater Kailash 1, Delhi
Smile designing is the planning that comes before cosmetic treatment: deciding how the teeth, gums and lips should look together, and showing you before anything is done. At Orion Dental Clinic, a dentist in Greater Kailash 1 (GK 1), South Delhi, this page explains how a smile plan is made, what digital previews can and cannot promise, what the research says people notice in a smile, and what can go wrong, in plain language.
Treatment is planned by Dr Anupam Sinha (BDS, MDS) and Dr Natalia DeSilva (BDS, MDS). Smile designing is part of cosmetic dentistry. Ask as many questions as you need before you decide.
These figures come from a systematic review of what laypeople accept, not from a rule. They are guides, and your own face, preferences and teeth decide your plan. Sources are listed at the end of the page.

Quick answer
Smile designing at Orion Dental Clinic in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi is the planning stage of cosmetic treatment: photographs, measurements and, for larger changes, a digital preview. Dr Anupam Sinha and Dr Natalia DeSilva discuss it with you before treatment starts. A preview is a plan, not a promise of the final result.
01 Overview
Smile designing is the process of planning how a smile should look before any cosmetic treatment is carried out. The dentist studies your face, lips, gums and teeth, notes what works and what you would like to change, and plans the treatment that would get there. It is not a treatment in itself. It is a way of deciding which treatments, if any, you need.
Digital smile design is one tool for this. It uses photographs and software to create a digital mock-up of a new smile before treatment starts, which helps you see the plan and take part in it, and which can make patients more comfortable with a procedure that cannot be undone.1 It is a visual aid, and the review that describes it also discusses its limitations.1
A smile plan may use a mix of treatments, such as teeth whitening, dental bonding, dental veneers, gum contouring or braces, and our page on a smile makeover explains how they are combined.
A smile design is a plan and a preview, and it earns its place by helping you decide before anything is changed.
02 Candidacy
Smile designing is useful for anyone who is thinking about more than one cosmetic change, or about a change that cannot easily be undone. The dentist decides what is realistic after an examination.
Smile designing suits people who want to think a change through, and it should slow down decisions that cannot be undone.
03 Options
A smile can be planned in simple or detailed ways, and the right level depends on how much you want to change.
For a small change, such as one chipped tooth, the dentist may plan from a discussion, photographs and an examination.
For small changes
Whatever the method, the plan should say which treatments are involved, in what order, and what each does and does not change.
The more you want to change, the more a preview helps, and a plan does not replace an examination.
04 Procedure
Every plan is individual, so your steps may differ. This is the usual order.1
The plan is made with you, in stages, and each stage can be questioned.
The dentist asks what you like and dislike about your smile, and what you would like to be different. You can also say what you do not want changed.
The dentist examines your teeth, gums and bite, looks at how your smile sits with your lips and face, and takes photographs, X-rays or scans.
Features such as the gap between the front teeth, whether the centre line is straight and how much gum shows are checked against ranges that laypeople accepted in studies, for example gaps of up to about 2 mm and gum showing of about 1.5 to 4 mm.2 These are guides, and your own preferences count.
The dentist proposes a plan and, for larger changes, a digital mock-up on your photograph.1 You can ask for changes, and you can say no.
Decay and gum disease are treated before any cosmetic work.5
The treatments in the plan are carried out in a sensible order over one or more visits, and you come back to check the result against the plan.
05 Aftercare
What you need to do afterwards depends on the treatments in your plan, and your dentist will give you written instructions.
Keep a copy of your smile plan and photographs, so that any future dentist can see what was intended.
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between the teeth every day. Healthy gums and teeth are what hold a cosmetic result.
Tell the clinic about a chip, a rough edge, a loose restoration or sore gums, rather than waiting for the next visit.
Keep your regular dental check-ups, so that any change is found early.
Call the clinic on 098115 01995 the same day if you have sensitivity or pain that your usual pain relief does not control, gums that are very red, swollen or painful, a chip, crack or rough edge on a treated tooth, or a restoration that comes loose. If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, or swelling that spreads across your face or neck, call 112 or go to a hospital emergency department.
Keep the plan, clean carefully and report changes early.
06 Limits and risks
A smile plan is only worth making if it leads to treatment you want and that suits your teeth. These are situations where a plan should be slowed down or changed:
In these cases the first step may be treatment of the teeth and gums, a simpler option, or more time to think.
A preview is not a promise. A digital mock-up shows a proposed smile, and the actual result depends on your teeth, your gums and the treatment. The review that describes digital smile design also discusses its limitations.1
Expectations and marketing. A scoping review of 57 papers on cosmetic dentistry raised concerns about patients' increased expectations, commercialisation, psychological risks for vulnerable patients and harm from invasive procedures. Most of the literature was opinion.3
Guide values are not rules. A review of 66 studies found acceptance thresholds for some smile features, such as gaps and gum display, but not for others, and the studies differed too much to be combined.2
Evidence for the effects is limited. Reviewers found that orthodontic treatment moderately improves how attractive a smile looks, but nine of the ten studies had a serious risk of bias.4
A good smile plan names these limits, and leaves every decision with you.
07 Your visit
At your first visit, a dentist at Orion Dental Clinic asks what you like and dislike about your smile, and what you would like to be different. Bring photographs of smiles you like, and tell us about your health, medicines and earlier dental work.
The dentist examines your teeth, gums and bite and takes photographs. For larger changes you may see a digital mock-up on your own photograph, and you hear what each step would involve and what could go wrong. You can ask for changes to the plan, and you can say no.
The first visit produces a plan and a preview, not treatment.

11 Travelling patients
Smile designing is well suited to people who live elsewhere, because much of it can be done at a distance: you can send photographs, talk through goals and see a preview before you decide to travel. The treatment that follows needs examination and one or more visits, so the plan should say how many and how long each takes.
You can read about smile makeovers and veneers for international patients.
A smile plan made before you travel saves time, as long as it is followed by a proper examination.
