Quick answer

Metal braces at Orion Dental Clinic in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi use stainless steel brackets and a wire to move teeth gradually into position. Dr Anupam Sinha plans each case after an examination and records. Treatment usually takes 18 to 24 months, with adjustments every six to eight weeks and a retainer afterwards.

01 Overview

What are metal braces, and how do they work in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi?

Metal braces are the conventional type of fixed braces. Small stainless steel brackets are bonded to the teeth with tooth-coloured composite resin, and a thin archwire runs through them. The wire is held in each bracket by a small coloured elastic ring. Many people call them train tracks, and they are the type most often used in children.1

The wire does the work. It is shaped to the position the teeth should reach, and as the teeth move into it, thicker wires are introduced step by step, which increases the force on the teeth. Patients often call this tightening.1 At the end the braces are taken off and the teeth are left intact.1

The strengths of metal braces are that they are robust and well proven. The drawbacks are that they are visible, the elastic rings can discolour between visits, and hard food can break the brackets and interrupt treatment.1 Our page on braces treatment compares them with the other types.

Metal braces are the standard against which other fixed braces are compared, and they trade appearance for strength.

02 Candidacy

Who can have metal braces in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi?

Metal braces are used for the same problems as other fixed braces, and they can be fitted at most ages once the adult teeth have come through.2 The orthodontist decides after an examination and records.

Who metal braces often suit

  • Children and teenagers, for whom this is the most commonly used type.1
  • People with crowded teeth, teeth that stick out, an overbite, an underbite or gaps between teeth.2
  • People who want a robust appliance and are comfortable with how it looks.1
  • People who will clean around the brackets every day and keep to the visits.2

Who needs extra care or a different type

  • People who want braces that are hard to see. Ceramic braces, lingual braces or clear aligners may suit better.1
  • People with tooth decay or gum disease that has not been treated.5
  • People who find it hard to avoid hard, sticky and chewy food, which can break the brackets.5
  • Anyone with a metal allergy, who should tell the orthodontist before treatment starts.

Metal braces suit most people who need fixed braces, and the main question is usually how much the appearance matters to you.

03 Options

Which metal braces options are there in Greater Kailash 1?

Most metal braces hold the wire with elastic rings, but there are variations, and other types of braces are an alternative.

Metal brackets with coloured elastic rings

The standard design. A small coloured ring holds the wire in each bracket and is changed at visits. The rings can discolour between visits.1

The conventional design 1

Metal brackets with silver rings

Silver elastic rings are available if you want the appliance to blend in more. They hold the wire in the same way as coloured ones.1

Blends in more 1

Self-ligating metal brackets

A built-in clip holds the wire instead of rings, so wire changes can take less time. The British Orthodontic Society says there is no evidence that this gives a better result.1 See self-ligating braces.

Clip instead of rings 1

If appearance matters more to you than strength, ask about ceramic braces, lingual braces or clear aligners.

Main drawbackVisible, elastics can stain and hard food can break the attachments 1Slightly harder to remove, and not always advised on lower teeth in a deep bite 1Speech and tongue problems at first and harder cleaning 1

Metal is the robust choice, and the alternatives trade some of that strength for a less visible appliance.

04 Procedure

How are metal braces fitted, step by step?

Every case is planned individually, so your steps may differ. This is the usual order for metal braces.12

Treatment is a long series of small adjustments, and the retainer is what keeps the result.

  1. Consultation and records for metal braces

The orthodontist asks about your health and what you would like to change, examines your teeth, gums and bite, and takes X-rays, photographs or scans to plan the treatment.2

  2. Preparing the teeth for stainless steel brackets

Decay and gum problems are treated first. If space has to be made, your orthodontist will explain whether any teeth need to come out and why.

  3. Bonding the brackets

The teeth are cleaned and dried, and a stainless steel bracket is bonded to each tooth with tooth-coloured composite resin.1 Tell the orthodontist if a front tooth was ever knocked or damaged.2

  4. Placing the archwire and elastic rings

A thin wire is threaded through the brackets and each bracket is closed with a small elastic ring, which you can usually choose in a colour, or in silver.1

  5. Adjustment visits every six to eight weeks

At each visit the rings are changed and the wire is adjusted, and thicker wires are used as treatment goes on, which feels tighter for a day or two.15 Across five studies the average was about 18 visits.3

  6. Removing the metal braces

When the teeth are in position the brackets are taken off. The appliance can be removed at the end, leaving the teeth intact.1

  7. Retainers after metal braces

All fixed appliance treatment is followed by retention, so you are given retainers and told how long to wear them.1

05 Aftercare

Living with metal braces in Greater Kailash 1: care and cleaning

Your orthodontist will give you written advice for your braces, and that comes first. These are the basics from NHS trust patient information.5

The first week

Soreness and rubbing on the lips and cheeks are normal at first and should ease. Start with soft food cut into small pieces, use comfort wax where the brace rubs, and take pain relief as directed.5

Cleaning every day

Brush the teeth and gums with fluoride toothpaste twice a day and after all meals, and use an interdental brush or single-tufted brush around the brackets and behind the wires. Use a fluoride mouthwash once a day, at a different time from brushing.5

Food and drink

Between meals drink only plain milk or water. Avoid fizzy drinks, sports drinks, juices and sugary sweets, and avoid hard, sticky and chewy food.5

If a bracket breaks

Ring the clinic as soon as possible and do not wait for your next visit, because breakages can lengthen treatment.5

When to call us

Ring the clinic on 098115 01995 as soon as a bracket or band comes off, or if a wire is jabbing your cheek and wax does not help. Do not wait for the next adjustment, because breakages can lengthen treatment. Tell us about very red or swollen gums, a loose tooth or a white chalky mark on a tooth. For swelling across your face or neck, or trouble breathing or swallowing, go to a hospital emergency department.

Brush around every bracket, drink only water or milk between meals and call early if one breaks.

06 Limits and risks

When are metal braces not the right choice?

Metal braces suit most people who need fixed braces, but not always straight away. These are situations where your orthodontist may delay treatment or suggest a different type:

  • Tooth decay or gum disease that has not been treated.
  • A strong wish for an appliance that cannot be seen.
  • Not being able to avoid hard, sticky and chewy food.
  • Not being able to keep to the visits every six to eight weeks.
  • A known metal allergy.

In these cases ceramic braces, lingual braces or clear aligners may be better, or treatment may start after the teeth and gums have been treated.

Risks and complications

Decay and white marks. The trust leaflet warns of a higher risk of decay and gum disease during treatment, and says the first sign of tooth decay is a white mark.5 In a Cochrane review, one study found fewer new marks with fluoride foam applied professionally every two months and another with a 5000 ppm fluoride toothpaste, but the evidence was of low certainty.4 Ask your orthodontist whether extra fluoride is advised for you.

Breakages and a longer treatment. Hard foods can easily break the brackets and disrupt treatment.1 The average length in 22 studies was 19.9 months, and missed visits and breakages can add to it.35

Soreness and rubbing. Teeth are often sore for a few days after fitting and after adjustments, and the brackets can rub the lips and cheeks at first.25

Teeth can move back. All fixed appliance treatment is followed by retention, because without it teeth tend to return towards their old position.1

A good plan names these risks before treatment starts, and daily cleaning is the strongest protection against most of them.

07 Your visit

What happens at your first metal braces consultation?

At your first visit, a dentist at Orion Dental Clinic asks what you would like to change, and about your health, medicines and allergies, including any metal allergy, and earlier dental treatment. Bring any previous X-rays or reports, for yourself or for your child.

The orthodontist examines your teeth, gums and bite and may take X-rays, photographs or scans. You then talk through whether metal braces suit your teeth, what the coloured or silver rings involve, how long treatment is likely to take and what the risks are, so that you can compare them with the other types before you decide.

No braces are fitted at the first visit: it is for questions and a plan.

11 Travelling patients

Thinking of metal braces and living outside Delhi?

Metal braces are adjusted every six to eight weeks for around 18 to 24 months,12 so they suit people who can reach the clinic regularly. If you live elsewhere, tell us where and how often you could visit, and we will say frankly whether treatment here would be practical. Some people are better served by starting treatment in their own city, and we would rather tell you that than book visits you cannot keep.

You can read about braces for international patients.

12 Questions

Metal braces questions patients ask in Greater Kailash 1

How long do metal braces take?

Fixed braces usually stay on for 18 to 24 months.1 In a review of 22 studies the average was 19.9 months,3 and a retainer follows. Your orthodontist will give a timeline for your own teeth.

Do metal braces hurt?

Teeth are often sore for a few days after the braces are fitted and after adjustments, and the brackets can rub the lips and cheeks at first. Soft food, comfort wax and pain relief taken as directed help.5 Contact the clinic if the pain lasts more than a few days.2

Are metal braces still used?

Yes. Fixed metal braces are the most common type of braces and the type most often used in children, because they are robust and can move teeth very precisely.1

Do metal braces stain the teeth?

The brackets themselves do not, but the coloured elastic rings can discolour between visits,1 and plaque left around the brackets can leave white marks that are an early sign of decay.5 Careful cleaning prevents most of this.

How do I clean my teeth with metal braces?

Brush with fluoride toothpaste twice a day and after meals, use an interdental brush or a single-tufted brush around the brackets and behind the wires, and use a fluoride mouthwash once a day at a different time.5

What should I do if a bracket breaks?

Ring the clinic as soon as possible, and do not wait for your next visit, because breakages can lengthen treatment.5

Can adults have metal braces?

Yes. Braces are often recommended for children and teenagers once the adult teeth have come through, and adults can have them too.2 See braces for adults.

Should I choose metal or ceramic braces?

Both can move teeth effectively.1 Metal braces are more robust and ceramic braces are less obvious, and your orthodontist will explain which suits your bite.

Where can I find metal braces near me in South Delhi?

Orion Dental Clinic is a metal braces clinic in Greater Kailash 1 (GK 1), in the basement of E 75, Greater Kailash Enclave 1, opposite Anubhav Play School, with the entrance at Gate 1.
