Quick answer

Cosmetic dentistry at Orion Dental Clinic in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi changes how teeth and a smile look, from whitening and bonding to veneers, gum contouring and a full smile plan. Dr Anupam Sinha and Dr Natalia DeSilva plan each case after an examination, and healthy teeth and gums come first.

01 Overview

What is cosmetic dentistry, and what does it include in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi?

Cosmetic dentistry is dental treatment whose main aim is to improve how the teeth and smile look. It overlaps with restorative dentistry, which repairs teeth, and with orthodontics, which moves them. At Orion Dental Clinic it includes teeth whitening, smile designing, a smile makeover, dental veneers, dental bonding and gum contouring, each explained on its own page.

Research on cosmetic dentistry is thin. A scoping review of 57 papers found that most were opinion pieces, with only 11 cross-sectional studies and 10 literature reviews, and it raised concerns about patients' rising expectations, marketing, psychological risks for vulnerable patients and harm from invasive procedures.2 This page therefore sticks to what the sources support, and says where they do not.

A good result starts with a healthy mouth and realistic goals. Studies of what laypeople notice give some guidance: in a review of 66 studies, people tolerated gaps between the front teeth of up to about 2 mm and a centre line that was off by up to about 3 mm, and they accepted between about 1.5 and 4 mm of gum showing when smiling.3

Cosmetic dentistry goes well when it follows a plan for your whole smile, and when you know what each treatment can and cannot do.

02 Candidacy

Who can have cosmetic dentistry in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi?

Most healthy adults can have some form of cosmetic treatment, but not every treatment suits every person. Your dentist decides after an examination, and may suggest treating other problems first.

When cosmetic treatment is usually considered

  • Teeth that look stained or darker than you would like.1
  • Gaps, chips or uneven edges on front teeth.
  • A smile that shows more gum than you would like.3
  • Teeth that are crowded or out of line, where braces may improve how the smile looks.4

When to wait or take extra care

  • Tooth decay or gum disease that has not been treated, which come first.1
  • Whitening for anyone aged 17 or younger, or who is pregnant or breastfeeding.1
  • Hopes of a result that treatment cannot deliver. Expectations are one of the concerns raised in the research.2
  • Crowns, dentures and implants, which whitening does not lighten.1

Health comes before appearance, and expectations are worth talking through before any treatment starts.

03 Options

Which cosmetic dentistry treatments are available in Greater Kailash 1?

Different problems call for different treatments, and many people need a combination. Each has its own page.

Teeth whitening for stained teeth

A gel lightens the colour of natural teeth, either with trays at home or in a single longer appointment. It is not lasting, and results can fade over about three years.1 See teeth whitening.

Lightens natural teeth only 1

Bonding, veneers and smile makeover

These reshape or cover the front of teeth to change their shape, size, colour or alignment. Read about dental bonding, dental veneers and a smile makeover.

Change shape, size and colour

Smile designing and gum contouring

Smile designing plans how teeth, gums and lips work together, and gum contouring reshapes the gum line. See smile designing and gum contouring.

Plan and reshape

Teeth that are out of line may look better after orthodontic treatment, which reviewers found moderately improves how attractive a smile looks, although the studies carry a serious risk of bias.4 See braces treatment.

Whitening changes colour, bonding and veneers change shape, and braces change position, so the right treatment depends on what you want to change.

04 Procedure

How does cosmetic dentistry work, step by step?

Every plan is individual, so your steps may differ. This is the usual order.15

A cosmetic plan starts with health and a clear picture of the goal, and the treatment itself is the shortest part.

  1. Consultation about your smile and your goals

The dentist asks what you would like to change and why, and about your health and earlier dental work. You can say what you do not want to change as well.

  2. Examination and records for a cosmetic treatment plan

The dentist examines your teeth, gums and bite, and takes photographs, X-rays or scans. Existing fillings, crowns and any signs of decay or gum disease are noted, because they affect the choices.

  3. Treating health problems first

Decay and gum disease are treated before any cosmetic work. Whitening, for example, is not advised for people with unhealthy teeth or gums.1

  4. Planning the smile and previewing it

For larger changes, the plan can be shown to you in advance, for example as a digital mock-up, so that you can see and discuss it before treatment starts.5

  5. The cosmetic treatment itself

Whitening, bonding, veneers or gum contouring are carried out in one or more visits, with local anaesthetic where it is needed. Your dentist explains each step and what to expect afterwards.

  6. Review and ongoing care

You come back for a review to check the result and how your teeth feel, and you are shown how to keep the treated teeth clean and healthy.

05 Aftercare

Caring for your smile after cosmetic dentistry in Greater Kailash 1

Your dentist will give you written instructions for the treatment you have, and those come first.

After whitening

Teeth can be sensitive to cold or sweet food and drink, and gums can be sore. This is usually short-lived.1 Tell your dentist if it is troublesome.

After other cosmetic work

Follow the advice you are given about food, biting hard things and cleaning around the treated teeth. Report any rough edge, chip or loose restoration.

Every day

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between the teeth every day. Healthy gums and teeth are what hold a cosmetic result.

Check-ups

Keep your regular dental check-ups, so that any change in a treated tooth or in the gum is found early.

When to call us

Call the clinic on 098115 01995 the same day if you have sensitivity or pain that your usual pain relief does not control, gums that are very red, swollen or painful, a chip, crack or rough edge on a treated tooth, or a restoration that comes loose. If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, or swelling that spreads across your face or neck, call 112 or go to a hospital emergency department.

Good daily care and regular check-ups protect a cosmetic result.

06 Limits and risks

When is cosmetic dentistry not the right choice?

Cosmetic treatment is optional, and it does not suit everyone at every time. A good dentist is willing to say wait, or say no. These are situations where treatment may be delayed or a different plan made:

  • Tooth decay or gum disease that has not been treated.
  • Whitening for people aged 17 or younger, or who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Whitening where the aim is to change the colour of crowns, dentures or implants.
  • Expectations that treatment cannot meet.
  • A wish for a quick change to the whole smile without a plan.

In these cases the first step may be treatment of the teeth and gums, a different treatment, or a wait.

Risks and complications

The evidence is thin. In a scoping review of 57 papers on cosmetic dentistry, 36 were opinion pieces, and the authors describe the literature as predominantly anecdotal and call for more research.2

Invasive treatment can do harm. The same review lists biological harm from invasive cosmetic procedures, psychological risks for vulnerable patients and patients' increased expectations among its concerns.2 This is why treatments that remove tooth substance are planned with particular care.

Whitening has limits. It lightens natural teeth only and may last around three years, with sensitivity, sore gums or white patches on the gums as possible side effects.1 Products bought without professional advice may not work as well and can harm the teeth and gums.1

Smile attractiveness is subjective. What people accept in a smile varies, and reviews of smile aesthetics could only give threshold values for some features.3 A plan should reflect your own face and your own preferences.

A good plan names these limits before treatment starts, and treats cosmetic goals as secondary to health.

07 Your visit

What happens at your first cosmetic dentistry consultation?

At your first visit, a dentist at Orion Dental Clinic asks what you would like to change about your smile and why, and about your health, medicines and earlier dental work. You can start with one tooth or with your whole smile.

The dentist examines your teeth, gums and bite and explains which cosmetic treatments could help, such as whitening, bonding, veneers, braces or gum contouring, with what each involves and risks. You are told if a simpler or reversible option would do.

You hear the options, including the simple ones, before anything is decided.

12 Questions

Cosmetic dentistry questions patients ask in Greater Kailash 1

What is cosmetic dentistry?

It is dental treatment whose main aim is to improve how teeth and a smile look, such as whitening, bonding, veneers and gum contouring. It overlaps with restorative dentistry and orthodontics.

Is cosmetic dentistry only about looks?

Mainly, but health comes first. Decay and gum disease are treated before cosmetic work, and whitening is not advised for people with unhealthy teeth or gums.1

Which cosmetic treatment is right for me?

It depends on what you want to change. Whitening changes colour, bonding and veneers change shape and size, and braces change position. Your dentist will explain the choices at a consultation, and the pages on whitening, veneers and smile makeovers explain each one in turn, with what to ask at a consultation before you decide.

How long does whitening last?

It is not lasting. With your dentist's advice, it may last around three years.1

Does cosmetic dentistry have risks?

Yes. Invasive treatments can cause biological harm, expectations can be unrealistic, and the research on cosmetic dentistry is mostly opinion.2 The section on risks has more detail.

What do people notice most in a smile?

A review of 66 studies found acceptance thresholds for gaps between front teeth, a crooked centre line, the amount of gum showing and how level the smile is.3 Your dentist can show you what applies to your own smile.

Can braces improve the look of a smile?

Reviewers found that orthodontic treatment moderately improves how attractive a smile looks, although the studies carried a serious risk of bias.4

Can I preview my new smile before treatment?

For larger changes, digital smile design and mock-ups can show a preview, so that you can discuss it before any treatment starts.5
