Self-Ligating Braces in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi

Self-ligating braces hold the wire with a built-in clip instead of small elastic rings. At Orion Dental Clinic, a dentist in Greater Kailash 1 (GK 1), South Delhi, they are planned by Dr Anupam Sinha, who holds a master's degree in orthodontics. This page explains what the clip changes, what the research says about it, and what to expect from treatment, in plain language.

Treatment is planned by Dr Anupam Sinha (BDS, MDS), and Dr Natalia DeSilva (BDS, MDS) also sees patients at the clinic. For the wider picture, read our guide to braces treatment. Ask as many questions as you need before you decide.

Quick answer

Self-ligating braces at Orion Dental Clinic in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi hold the wire with a built-in clip instead of elastic rings. Dr Anupam Sinha plans each case after an examination and records. Wire changes can be quicker, but reviews of the research find little or no difference in pain, visits or treatment time.

01 Overview

What are self-ligating braces, and how do they work in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi?

In conventional braces a small elastic ring ties the wire into each bracket. In self-ligating braces the bracket has a built-in clip or gate that holds the wire instead, so there are no elastic rings. They come in metal or ceramic versions from the major manufacturers.1 The wire is held loosely, so it can slide more freely through the brackets.1

Two practical advantages are claimed and supported by the British Orthodontic Society: wire changes take less time, and there is less risk of discolouration because no elastics are used.1 The same society says there is no evidence that the mechanism produces a better result than a conventional fixed appliance.1

Research papers separate the clips into passive designs, which hold the wire loosely, and active designs, which press on it. Your orthodontist chooses a system and explains why. Our general guide to braces treatment compares this type with the others, and our page on metal braces explains the conventional design.

Self-ligating braces change how the wire is held, and that is mostly a convenience at visits, not a way to a faster or better result.

02 Candidacy

Who can have self-ligating braces in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi?

Self-ligating braces are used for the same problems as conventional fixed braces, and they can be fitted at most ages once the adult teeth have come through.2 The orthodontist decides after an examination and records.

Who self-ligating braces may suit

  • People who need fixed braces for crowded teeth, teeth that stick out, an overbite, an underbite or gaps.2
  • People who do not like the idea of coloured elastic rings that can discolour between visits.1
  • People who would like shorter wire changes at their visits.1
  • People who will clean around the brackets every day and keep to the visits.2

Who needs extra care or a different plan

  • Anyone hoping that self-ligating braces will be less painful, shorter or need fewer visits. Reviews do not show that.35
  • People who want the braces to be hard to see. Ceramic or lingual braces, or clear aligners, may suit better.1
  • People with tooth decay or gum disease that has not been treated.2
  • People who cannot keep to the visits every six to eight weeks.2

Choose self-ligating braces for how they handle at visits, and not for a promise of speed.

03 Options

Which self-ligating options are there in Greater Kailash 1?

The choice is partly the material of the bracket and partly the design of the clip.

Self-ligating metal braces

Stainless steel brackets with a built-in clip. They are robust and have no elastic rings to discolour.1 Conventional metal braces use rings instead.

Metal version 1

Self-ligating ceramic braces

Tooth-coloured brackets with a clip, which are less obvious than metal ones and also avoid elastic rings.1 Read about ceramic braces.

Ceramic version 1

Passive and active clips

Passive clips hold the wire loosely and active clips press on it. In one network meta-analysis, alignment was about 10 days faster with active clips, but total treatment time was no different.4

Two clip designs 4

Other options are lingual braces, which sit behind the teeth, and clear aligners, which are removable trays.

The clip is a design choice, and the plan and the orthodontist matter far more than the bracket.

04 Procedure

How are self-ligating braces fitted, step by step?

Every case is planned individually, so your steps may differ. This is the usual order for self-ligating braces.12

Treatment is a long series of small adjustments, with a retainer to keep the result.

  1. Consultation and records for self-ligating braces

The orthodontist asks about your health and what you would like to change, examines your teeth, gums and bite, and takes X-rays, photographs or scans to plan the treatment.2

  2. Preparing the teeth for the brackets

Decay and gum problems are treated first. If space has to be made, your orthodontist will explain whether any teeth need to come out and why.

  3. Bonding the self-ligating brackets

A bracket with a built-in clip is bonded to each tooth, in metal or ceramic.1 Tell the orthodontist if a front tooth was ever knocked or damaged.2

  4. Placing the archwire in the clips

The wire is slipped into each bracket and the clip is closed over it. There are no elastic rings, so there is nothing to change except the wire itself.1

  5. Adjustment visits every six to eight weeks

You come back every six to eight weeks.2 Wires are changed to progressively thicker ones, and opening and closing the clips can be quicker than changing rings.14

  6. Removing the braces

When the teeth are in position the brackets are taken off and the teeth are left intact.1

  7. Retainers after self-ligating braces

All fixed appliance treatment is followed by retention, so you are given retainers and told how long to wear them.1

05 Aftercare

Living with self-ligating braces in Greater Kailash 1: care and cleaning

Your orthodontist will give you written advice for your braces, and that comes first. These are the basics from NHS patient information.2

The first few days

Teeth can be sore for a few days after the braces are fitted and after adjustments. Soft food and pain relief taken as directed may help.2 One review found pain levels did not differ between bracket types in the first week.3

Brushing and cleaning

Use fluoride toothpaste in the morning, at night and after meals, and clean between the teeth and under the wire with an interdental brush every day. With no elastic rings the brackets are smoother, but plaque still collects around them.2

What to eat and drink

Keep sugary food and drink to a minimum. Hard, crunchy and sticky food can break brackets or open a clip, so cut food into smaller pieces, and leave chewing gum alone.2

If a clip or bracket breaks

Ring the clinic and do not wait for your next visit, so that treatment is not held up.2

When to call us

Ring the clinic on 098115 01995 if a clip opens or a bracket comes off, if a wire pokes into your cheek, or if your gums are red and swollen. Plaque still collects around the brackets, so tell us if your gums bleed. For swelling that spreads across your face or neck, or trouble breathing or swallowing, go to a hospital emergency department.

Clean around the brackets daily, mind your food and call early if a clip or bracket breaks.

06 Limits and risks

When are self-ligating braces not the right choice?

Self-ligating braces suit most people who need fixed braces, but the clip is not a reason to choose them. These are situations where your orthodontist may suggest conventional braces or another type, or delay treatment:

  • Tooth decay or gum disease that has not been treated.
  • A strong wish for braces that cannot be seen.
  • A hope of a shorter treatment, fewer visits or less pain, which the evidence does not support.
  • Not being able to keep to the visits every six to eight weeks.

In these cases conventional braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces or clear aligners may suit better, or treatment may start after the teeth and gums have been treated.

Risks and complications

The advantages may not appear. A meta-analysis found that pain did not differ between conventional and self-ligating brackets at 4 hours, 24 hours, 3 days or 7 days, and that the number of appointments and the total treatment time did not differ either.3 An earlier review found insufficient high-quality evidence to support self-ligating brackets over conventional ones, or the reverse.5

Most things make no difference. A network meta-analysis of 30 randomised trials and 9 split-mouth studies found significant differences in only 16 of 85 comparisons between conventional, passive and active self-ligating brackets.4 Wire changes were quicker with active clips, and inserting a large steel wire was more painful with passive clips.

Decay and gum problems. Food and plaque collect around any brackets, so sugary food and drink can lead to decay, and gums can become red, swollen and painful if the teeth are not kept clean.2

Teeth can move back. All fixed appliance treatment is followed by retention, because teeth tend to return towards their old position without it.1

A good plan names these limits before treatment starts, and the retainer protects the result afterwards.

07 Your visit

What happens at your first self-ligating braces consultation?

At your first visit, a dentist at Orion Dental Clinic asks what you would like to change, and about your health, medicines, allergies and earlier dental treatment. If you are asking about clip braces because you have heard that they are faster or more comfortable, say so, and the orthodontist will explain what the research shows.

The orthodontist examines your teeth, gums and bite and may take X-rays, photographs or scans. You then compare self-ligating braces with conventional braces and the other types, how long treatment is likely to take and what the risks are, before you decide.

You hear what the research shows about clip braces before you choose them.

11 Travelling patients

Thinking of self-ligating braces and living outside Delhi?

The clip does not reduce the number of visits, so self-ligating braces still need an appointment every six to eight weeks for about 18 to 24 months.12 If you live in another city or country, tell us where you are and how often you could come, and we will say frankly whether treatment here is practical.

You can read about braces for international patients.

Self-ligating braces still need regular visits, so plan around how often you can really come.

12 Questions

Self-ligating braces questions patients ask in Greater Kailash 1

What are self-ligating braces?

They are fixed braces whose brackets have a built-in clip that holds the wire in place of small elastic rings. They are made in metal and in ceramic.1

Are self-ligating braces faster?

Wire changes can be quicker,1 but a meta-analysis found no significant difference in total treatment time or in the number of appointments between self-ligating and conventional brackets.3

Do self-ligating braces hurt less?

Pain did not differ significantly between conventional and self-ligating brackets after 4 hours, 24 hours, 3 days or 7 days in a meta-analysis,3 and a later review found a difference only for inserting a large steel wire, which was more painful with passive clips.4

Do self-ligating braces give better results?

The British Orthodontic Society says there is no evidence that the mechanism produces a better result than a conventional fixed appliance.1 A review of 17 studies also found insufficient high-quality evidence either way.5

Are self-ligating braces easier to keep clean?

There are no elastic rings to trap food, but the brackets still need to be cleaned around every day with an interdental brush.2 Careful brushing matters more than the bracket type.

How long do self-ligating braces take?

Fixed braces usually stay on for 18 to 24 months,1 with visits every six to eight weeks.2 A retainer follows.

Can adults have self-ligating braces?

Yes. Braces are not only for children and teenagers.2 Self-ligating brackets are available in tooth-coloured ceramic for people who want them to be less obvious.1

Should I choose self-ligating or conventional braces?

Both can straighten teeth. The clip shortens wire changes and avoids elastic rings, but it does not make treatment shorter or better,13 so choose with your orthodontist on the basis of how you want the braces to look and feel.

Where can I find self-ligating braces near me in South Delhi?

Orion Dental Clinic is a self-ligating braces clinic in Greater Kailash 1 (GK 1), in the basement of E 75, Greater Kailash Enclave 1, opposite Anubhav Play School, with the entrance at Gate 1. Patients come for self-ligating braces in Greater Kailash from Kailash Colony, CR Park, Nehru Place, Lajpat Nagar, Defence Colony and South Extension. 13 Second opinion

Curious whether clip braces would suit you?

A consultation lets you compare self-ligating braces with conventional braces, and hear what the research does and does not show. Bring any earlier X-rays or reports. The orthodontist will examine the teeth and explain the options, the visits and the time they take. Call us or message us on WhatsApp; there is no form to fill in.
