Quick answer

Braces for adults at Orion Dental Clinic in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi include metal, ceramic and lingual braces and clear aligners. Dr Anupam Sinha plans each case after an examination and records. Fixed braces usually take 18 to 24 months, with visits every six to eight weeks and a retainer afterwards.

01 Overview

What are braces for adults, and how do they work in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi?

The British Orthodontic Society says that teeth straightening is no longer limited to children and teenagers. Adults have braces for a straighter, more attractive smile and for a better bite, which may reduce the risk of future dental problems, and straighter teeth are easier to clean.1 The NHS also notes that adults can have braces, although they are often recommended for children and teenagers.2

Adults can choose from appliances designed to be less noticeable, to suit their work and lifestyle.1 Ceramic braces are popular with adults, lingual braces are hidden behind the teeth, and aligners are described as ideal for adults whose work makes visible braces difficult, within limits that this page explains.34

Some adults need only a small change. The British Orthodontic Society describes limited treatment, sometimes called short-term orthodontics, which typically involves only the six front teeth in one or both jaws.1 Your orthodontist will say whether that would meet your goals or whether full treatment is needed.

Adults can choose between fixed braces and aligners, and between full and limited treatment, so the first step is knowing what you want to change.

02 Candidacy

Who can have braces as an adult in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi?

There is no upper age limit in the British Orthodontic Society information, which says orthodontics is open to adults.1 The orthodontist decides after an examination and records, and checks the health of your teeth and gums first.

Who adult braces may suit

  • Adults with crowded teeth, teeth that stick out, an overbite, an underbite or gaps.2
  • Adults who want a better bite, as well as a better smile.1
  • Adults who need only the front teeth moved, who may suit limited treatment.1
  • Adults who will clean around the braces every day, keep to the visits and wear a retainer.23

Who needs extra care or a different plan

  • Adults with tooth decay or gum disease that has not been treated, who need that treatment first.
  • Adults with severe crowding, who need extractions or have a jaw-size problem, for whom aligners alone may not be enough.4
  • Adults who want to straighten their teeth with a do-it-yourself kit bought online, which the British Orthodontic Society warns carries serious risks.1
  • Adults who cannot keep to the visits every six to eight weeks.2

Being an adult is not a barrier, and the health of your teeth and gums matters more than your age.

03 Options

Which types of braces can adults have in Greater Kailash 1?

Adults can choose between several types, and the main differences are how visible they are and how they feel.

Ceramic braces for adults

Tooth-coloured brackets that are popular with adults. They can be as effective as metal, but they are sometimes not recommended for the lower teeth if the bite is deep.3 See ceramic braces.

Popular with adults 3

Lingual braces

Brackets bonded behind the teeth, so they cannot be seen. Speech difficulty, tongue soreness and harder cleaning are the drawbacks.3 See lingual braces.

Hidden 3

Clear aligners

Removable clear trays worn full-time except at meals, ideal for adults whose work makes visible braces hard, in mild to moderate cases.4 See clear aligners and Invisalign.

Removable 4

Metal braces remain the most robust choice if appearance matters less to you.

The right type depends on how your teeth need to move and on how much the appearance and the feel matter to you.

04 Procedure

How does braces treatment work for adults, step by step?

Every case is planned individually, so your steps may differ. This is the usual order for fixed braces.23

Adult treatment follows the same steps as for younger patients, with extra attention to gum health and to the choice of appliance.

  1. Consultation and records for adult braces

The orthodontist asks about your health and what you would like to change, examines your teeth, gums and bite, and takes X-rays, photographs or scans to plan the treatment.2

  2. Treating decay and gum problems first

Decay and gum problems are treated first so that the teeth and gums are healthy when the braces go on. If space has to be made, your orthodontist will explain whether any teeth need to come out and why.

  3. Choosing between fixed braces and aligners

You compare the types, including what the research says about each, and decide with your orthodontist.34

  4. Fitting the braces

For fixed braces, brackets are attached to each tooth with dental glue and a wire joins them, with elastic modules tying the wire in many designs.2

  5. Adjustment visits every six to eight weeks

You come back every six to eight weeks to have the braces adjusted.2 Fixed braces usually stay on for 18 to 24 months.3

  6. Taking the braces off

At the end the brackets are removed and the teeth are left intact.3

  7. Retainers after adult braces

All fixed appliance treatment is followed by retention, and aligner treatment needs retainers too, so that the teeth keep their corrected positions.34

05 Aftercare

Living with braces as an adult in Greater Kailash 1: care and cleaning

Your orthodontist will give you written advice for your braces, and that comes first. These are the basics from NHS patient information.2

The first few days

Teeth can be sore for a few days after the braces are fitted and after adjustments. Soft food and pain relief taken as directed may help.2

Every day

Brush with fluoride toothpaste in the morning, at night and after meals, and use an interdental brush every day between the teeth and under the braces.2

Food and drink

Cut back on sugary food and drink, avoid hard, crunchy and sticky food that can break the braces, cut food into smaller pieces and do not chew gum.2

Check-ups

Keep seeing your regular dentist for check-ups while you have braces, and ring the clinic if a bracket or wire breaks.2

When to call us

Ring the clinic on 098115 01995 the same day for a loose bracket, a wire that digs into your cheek or tongue, gums that bleed more than before, or a tooth that feels loose. Adults who notice gum recession, or whose teeth stay sore for more than a few days, should say so at the next visit. If you cannot breathe or swallow easily, or swelling spreads across your face or neck, go to a hospital emergency department.

Clean around the braces every day, choose food carefully and keep your dental check-ups.

06 Limits and risks

When are braces not the right choice for adults?

Braces do not suit every adult at every time. A good orthodontist is willing to say wait. These are situations where braces may be delayed or a different plan made:

  • Tooth decay or gum disease that has not been treated.
  • A wish to straighten the teeth with a do-it-yourself kit and no examination.
  • Not being able to keep to the visits every six to eight weeks.
  • Not being ready to wear a retainer afterwards.
  • Severe crowding or a jaw-size problem, if you are hoping for aligners alone.

In these cases the first step may be treatment of the teeth and gums, a different appliance or a combined plan.

Risks and complications

Decay and gum problems. Food and plaque collect around brackets, so sugary food and drink can lead to tooth decay, and gums can become red, swollen and painful if the teeth are not kept clean.2

Do-it-yourself kits. The British Orthodontic Society warns that online and social media adverts for straightening teeth at home, without a dentist or orthodontist, carry serious risks.1 A proper orthodontic assessment is essential for aligner treatment.4

Aligners may give a worse result. A review of 11 studies, with patients whose average age was 28, found worse occlusal results with aligners than with fixed braces and concluded the evidence does not support aligners as equally effective.5

Teeth can move back. All fixed appliance treatment is followed by retention, and aligner treatment needs retainers too.34

A good plan names these risks before treatment starts, and an examination comes before any appliance.

07 Your visit

What happens at your first adult braces consultation?

At your first visit, a dentist at Orion Dental Clinic asks what you would like to change about your smile and bite, how you feel about visible braces, and about your health, medicines and earlier dental work, including any past orthodontic treatment. Bring any old retainers or X-rays.

The orthodontist examines your teeth, gums and bite, and checks that your gums and teeth are healthy enough for braces, which is part of adult treatment. You then compare fixed braces, tooth-coloured braces and clear aligners for your own mouth, with the time, the visits and the risks of each, and take as long as you need to decide.

For adults the first visit also checks that gums and teeth are ready for braces.
