Teeth whitening · Greater Kailash 1, Delhi
Orion Dental Clinic is a dentist in Greater Kailash 1 (GK 1), South Delhi, and whitening is one of the simplest cosmetic treatments we plan. This page explains how professional whitening works, how at-home and in-office methods compare, what the research says about light, strength and sensitivity, and what whitening cannot do, in plain language, so that you can decide with confidence.
Treatment is planned by Dr Anupam Sinha (BDS, MDS) and Dr Natalia DeSilva (BDS, MDS). Whitening is one part of cosmetic dentistry. Ask as many questions as you need before you decide.
These statements come from NHS patient information and from systematic reviews, listed at the end of the page. Your dentist will explain what suits your teeth.

Quick answer
Teeth whitening at Orion Dental Clinic in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi uses a gel to lighten natural teeth, either with trays at home or in the clinic. Dr Anupam Sinha and Dr Natalia DeSilva check your teeth and gums first. Results are not lasting, sensitivity is common, and crowns, dentures and implants do not change colour.
01 Overview
Teeth whitening lightens the colour of teeth with a gel, and sometimes a light or laser is used alongside it. It can help with staining from age, frequent coffee, tea or red wine, or smoking.1 The gel is a peroxide bleach that works on the natural tooth, so it only lightens natural teeth: crowns, dentures and implants stay the same colour.1
The effect is not lasting. With your dentist's advice, it may last around three years.1 Strong whitening gels should only be used or sold by dental professionals who know how to use them correctly.1
Whitening is one of several ways to change how a smile looks. Our guide to cosmetic dentistry explains the others, and our page on smile designing explains how treatments are planned together.
Whitening changes the colour of natural teeth only, so the first question is whether the stain is in the teeth you want to change.
02 Candidacy
Whitening suits many adults with healthy teeth and gums, and your dentist checks first. The NHS lists several groups who should not have it.1
Whitening is for healthy natural teeth, and an examination comes first.
03 Options
There are professional options and products that people buy for themselves, and the research compares the professional ones.
Whitening gel and trays made to fit your teeth are worn at home, usually for around 2 to 6 weeks.1
At home, supervised 1
If the stain is deeper or the shape of teeth bothers you, ask about dental bonding or dental veneers.
| At-home trays | In-office whitening | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it is done | At home, with custom trays | In the clinic |
| Time | About 2 to 6 weeks 1 | About 1 to 2 hours in one appointment 1 |
| Sensitivity | No difference found between the two 2 | No difference found between the two 2 |
| Whitening effect | No difference found between the two 2 | No difference found between the two 2 |
| Strength of the gel | Lower strength gels gave less sensitivity and better objective colour change than 35% hydrogen peroxide in in-office trials 3 | Higher strength raised sensitivity without a clear gain in the shade patients saw 3 |
The two professional methods perform alike on average, so choose the one that fits your time and your teeth.
04 Procedure
Every plan is individual, so your steps may differ. This is the usual order for professional whitening.1
Whitening takes little time, and the examination and the review are what make it controlled.
The dentist examines your teeth and gums, and checks for decay, gum disease and worn areas, because whitening is not advised for unhealthy teeth or gums.1
Whitening only lightens natural teeth, so fillings, crowns and implants keep their colour.1 In laboratory studies, bleaching can affect restorative materials, although no clinical report was found of a restoration that had to be renewed because of it.5 The dentist notes any that might look different afterwards.
Your tooth shade is recorded with a shade guide, and photographs may be taken, so that you and the dentist can see the change.
You compare the methods. At-home and in-office bleaching gave similar results and similar sensitivity in a meta-analysis,2 so the choice is mostly about time and convenience.
For custom trays, you wear them at home with the gel as instructed. In the clinic, the gel is applied and the gums are protected with a shield or paste.1
You come back to check the result and how your teeth feel. The result is not lasting, and with your dentist's advice may last around three years.1
05 Aftercare
Your dentist will give you written instructions for your method, and those come first.
Teeth can be sensitive to cold or sweet food and drink, and gums can be sore. This is common and usually short.1 Tell your dentist if it is troublesome.
Some people have sore gums or a sore throat, or notice white patches on the gums, even when protection is used. These tend to settle in a short time.1
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between the teeth every day. Cutting down on foods and drinks that stain helps the shade last, although the colour will fade over time.1
Keep your regular check-ups, and ask your dentist before repeating whitening.
Call the clinic on 098115 01995 the same day if you have sensitivity or pain that your usual pain relief does not control, gums that are very red, swollen or painful, a chip, crack or rough edge on a treated tooth, or a restoration that comes loose. If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, or swelling that spreads across your face or neck, call 112 or go to a hospital emergency department.
Some sensitivity is normal, and a dentist should hear about anything that does not settle.
06 Limits and risks
Whitening is a light treatment, but it does not suit everyone. These are situations where your dentist may advise waiting or a different plan:
In these cases the first step may be treatment of the teeth and gums, a different cosmetic option, or a wait.
Sensitivity. Sensitivity to cold or sweet food and drink is a known side effect, and so are sore gums or throat and white patches on the gums.1 A meta-analysis found no difference in the risk or intensity of sensitivity between at-home and in-office bleaching.2
Stronger gel is not clearly better. A review of 14 studies with 649 patients found that 35% hydrogen peroxide caused more sensitivity than 6% to 20% gels, and that the lower strengths changed the colour more on instrument measurement, with no difference in the shade patients saw.3
Light may add nothing. A meta-analysis of 21 trials found that adding light to in-office bleaching gave no improvement in colour change and did not change sensitivity.4
Unregulated products and restorations. The NHS says strong whitening products should only be used or sold by dental professionals, and that products from pharmacies, online or salons may harm the teeth and gums.1 Bleaching can also affect fillings and other restorations in laboratory studies.5
A good plan names these limits before treatment starts, and a dentist's examination comes first.
07 Your visit
At your first visit, a dentist at Orion Dental Clinic asks what bothers you about the colour of your teeth, how long it has been like that, and about your health, medicines and any earlier whitening. Please say if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
The dentist examines your teeth and gums, checks any fillings and crowns, and records your shade. You then talk through the methods, what to expect for sensitivity, how long the result may last and what whitening cannot change, and you can take your time to decide.
The first visit is for examination and questions, and whitening starts only when you and the dentist agree.
08 Why this clinic
Strong whitening gels should be used by dental professionals,1 and you meet the doctors who would plan yours.

11 Travelling patients
Whitening is one of the cosmetic treatments that can fit into a short visit, because an in-office session takes about one appointment of one to two hours.1 A home kit with custom trays takes weeks, so it suits people who will be at home afterwards. Either way, an examination comes first, so allow time for it.
You can read about smile makeovers and veneers for international patients.
Whitening can fit a short visit, as long as there is time for the examination first.
