Quick answer

A gap between teeth at Orion Dental Clinic in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi can be closed with braces, bonding or veneers, or left alone. Dr Anupam Sinha and Dr Natalia DeSilva explain each after an examination. Braces move the teeth, bonding and veneers add material, and a retainer matters for any method that moves teeth.

01 Overview

What causes a gap between teeth, and how can it be closed in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi?

A gap can be a natural feature, or it can be linked to a missing tooth, teeth that are small for the jaw, gum disease or a habit such as thumb sucking, and the dentist looks for the cause before suggesting treatment. The NHS lists large gaps among the reasons braces may help, together with crowded teeth, teeth that stick out and bite problems.1

There are three main ways to close a gap. Braces or aligners move the teeth together, which takes one to two years for a fixed brace and is followed by a retainer.1 Bonding adds tooth-coloured resin to the sides of the teeth, and a German evidence-based guideline says composite is a viable option for direct restorations and for tooth shape corrections.5 A veneer is a thin shell bonded to the front of a tooth, and 95.5% of porcelain veneers were still in place after ten years in a review of 25 studies.4

None of these is better for every gap, and each asks something of the tooth, your time or its upkeep. Our pages on dental bonding, dental veneers and braces treatment explain them in detail.

A gap can be closed by moving the teeth or by adding to them, and the right choice depends on the cause and the size of the gap.

02 Candidacy

Who should consider closing a gap between teeth in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi?

Many gaps need no treatment, and the dentist decides with you after an examination.

When closing a gap is usually considered

  • A gap that bothers you when you smile.1
  • A large gap, or several gaps, which the NHS lists as a reason for braces.1
  • A gap that traps food, or makes cleaning difficult.1
  • A gap that has opened recently, which needs the cause found first.

When another plan may be needed

  • A gap caused by a missing tooth, which may need a replacement.
  • A gap that has opened because of gum disease, which needs treatment of the gums first.
  • A gap that you like, which can simply be left.
  • A wish for a quick change of a few teeth, which bonding or veneers may meet.45

Leave a gap you like, and find the cause of one that has changed.

03 Options

Which gap closing options are there in Greater Kailash 1?

The options differ in whether they move the tooth or cover it, and in how long they last in the studies.

Braces to close a gap between teeth

A fixed brace moves the teeth together and usually stays in place for one to two years, with adjustments every six to eight weeks.1 A retainer is needed afterwards, and without it the teeth can move back.12

1 to 2 years 1

Bonding to close a gap

Tooth-coloured resin built onto the sides of the teeth, with no tooth removed. In a review of 1,821 front-tooth composite restorations, 24.1% had failed after three years or more.3

24.1% failed after 3 years or more 3

Veneers to close a gap

Thin porcelain shells bonded to the front of the teeth. In a review of 25 studies, 95.5% of veneers were in place after ten years, and fracture was the commonest problem.4

95.5% at 10 years 4

The studies on bonding and veneers are about restorations in general, and not gaps alone.

Braces change the position of the teeth, and bonding and veneers change their shape.

04 Procedure

How is a gap between teeth examined and closed, step by step?

Every case is individual, so your steps may differ. This is the usual order.

The cause of the gap is found before any treatment, and holding the result is part of the plan.

  1. Questions about the gap between your teeth

The dentist asks how long the gap has been there, whether it is changing, and whether you have lost a tooth, had gum problems or have habits such as thumb sucking or tongue thrusting.

  2. Examining the gap and the bite

The dentist looks at the teeth, gums and bite, checks how the gap affects chewing and cleaning, and takes X-rays where needed.

  3. Finding the cause

A gap from a missing tooth, from gum disease or from the size of the teeth leads to a different plan from a natural gap.

  4. Discussing the options

You talk through braces, bonding, veneers and leaving the gap, with what the research says about how long each lasts.134

  5. Preparing and closing the gap

Braces are fitted and adjusted over one to two years, or resin or veneers are shaped and bonded to the teeth.15

  6. Holding the result

After braces, a retainer holds the teeth in place.12 Bonding and veneers are checked at regular visits.

  7. Review

A check shows whether the result has held, whether the gums are healthy, and whether anything needs repair.

05 Aftercare

Looking after your teeth after a gap is closed in Greater Kailash 1

Your dentist will give you written instructions, and those come first.

Braces

Keep sugary food and drink to meal times, avoid hard, crunchy and sticky foods, and report very red, swollen or painful gums.1

Retainer

Wear your retainer as the orthodontist advises, because without it the teeth can move back.1

Bonding

Avoid biting hard objects such as nails, pens or ice with bonded teeth, because the resin can chip.3

Veneers and check-ups

Avoid biting hard foods with veneered teeth and keep your regular check-ups, because fracture is the commonest problem.4

When to call us

Call the clinic on 098115 01995 if a bracket, wire, bonded edge or veneer breaks or comes off, if your gums are very red, swollen or painful, or if a tooth is sore for more than a few days. If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, or swelling that spreads across your face or neck, call 112 or go to a hospital emergency department.

Protect the repair from hard bites, and wear the retainer if you had braces.

06 Limits and risks

When is closing a gap between teeth not the right choice?

Closing a gap is a choice, and some gaps are better left or need another treatment first. These are situations where another plan may be better:

  • A gap you do not mind.
  • A gap caused by a missing tooth or by gum disease.
  • A large gap that bonding or veneers would make look wide teeth.
  • A person who cannot wear a retainer or attend braces visits.
  • Teeth that grind or bite hard, which can chip bonding and veneers.

In these cases treating the cause first, braces, or leaving the gap may be better.

Risks and complications

Closed gaps can reopen. Teeth moved by braces can move back without a retainer.12

Bonding does not last for ever. In a review of 1,821 front-tooth composite restorations, 24.1% had failed after three years or more, and fracture was among the commonest reasons.3

Veneers can fracture or come off. Fracture was the commonest problem in the veneer review, followed by debonding, and veneers need some enamel removed.4

The evidence is not about gaps alone. The reviews cover front-tooth restorations in general, so the results are a guide and not a promise for your gap.34

A good plan names these limits and says what upkeep to expect.

07 Your visit

What happens at your first gap between teeth appointment?

At your first visit, a dentist at Orion Dental Clinic asks how long you have had the gap, whether it is changing, and what you would like to change. You are asked about your health, any lost teeth, gum problems and habits such as thumb sucking.

The dentist examines your teeth, gums and bite and takes X-rays where needed. You then talk through the cause, the options, what each involves, how long it takes and what the risks are, including leaving the gap, and you can take your time to decide.

The first visit is for finding the cause and comparing options, and nothing is done until you agree.

Why do I have a gap between my teeth?

It may be natural, or linked to a missing tooth, small teeth, gum disease or a habit such as thumb sucking. The dentist looks for the cause.

Not always. Many gaps are harmless and can be left alone, though the NHS lists large gaps among the reasons braces may help.1

How long do braces take to close a gap?

A fixed brace usually stays in place for one to two years, with adjustments every six to eight weeks.1

Will the gap come back after braces?

It can if a retainer is not worn. The NHS says a retainer is needed to stop the teeth moving back.12

In a review of 1,821 front-tooth composite restorations, 24.1% had failed after three years or more, and fracture was among the commonest reasons.3

How long do veneers last?

In a review of 25 studies, 95.5% of porcelain veneers were still in place after ten years.4
