Yellow teeth · Greater Kailash 1, Delhi
Teeth turn yellow for several reasons, and the right treatment depends on which one applies to you. At Orion Dental Clinic, a dentist in Greater Kailash 1 (GK 1), South Delhi, this page explains why teeth look yellow, which stains whitening can lighten and which it cannot, what the research says about strength of gel, light and sensitivity, and the options when whitening is not suitable, in plain language.
Care is planned by Dr Anupam Sinha (BDS, MDS) and Dr Natalia DeSilva (BDS, MDS). Ask as many questions as you need before you buy any whitening product.
These statements come from NHS patient information and systematic reviews, listed at the end of the page. Your dentist will explain what applies to your own teeth.

Quick answer
Yellow teeth at Orion Dental Clinic in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi are examined to find the cause, because whitening lightens natural teeth stained by age, tea, coffee, red wine or smoking. Dr Anupam Sinha and Dr Natalia DeSilva explain what suits you. The effect fades, and it does not change crowns, dentures or implants.
01 Overview
The NHS says teeth whitening can help with staining from age, frequent coffee, tea or red wine, or smoking.1 Whitening uses a peroxide bleach on the natural tooth, so it only lightens natural teeth: crowns, dentures and implants stay the same colour.1 That is why the first question is whether the yellow is in the teeth you want to change.
Whitening does not last for ever. With your dentist's advice, it may last around three years, and strong whitening products should only be used or sold by dental professionals who know how to use them.1 Products bought in a pharmacy, online or from a salon do not work as well and may harm the teeth and gums, according to the NHS.1
Some yellow teeth are better treated another way, such as bonding or veneers, and our page on teeth whitening explains the options in detail. Our page on dental veneers covers a thin covering for the front of a tooth, and our page on dental bonding covers tooth-coloured resin.
Yellow natural teeth can often be lightened, but only an examination tells you which stain you have.
02 Candidacy
The NHS lists common causes of staining, and the dentist works out which applies to your teeth.1
Whitening is for stains on healthy natural teeth, and the dentist checks first.
03 Options
The research compares where whitening is done, the strength of the gel and whether light helps.
Gel and trays made to fit your teeth are worn at home, usually for around 2 to 6 weeks.1 A meta-analysis found no difference in the risk or intensity of sensitivity between at-home and in-office bleaching.2
2 to 6 weeks 1
The gel is applied in the clinic, with the gums protected, in about one appointment of 1 to 2 hours.1 Adding light or laser gave no improvement in colour change in a review of 21 trials.4
1 to 2 hours 1
A tooth-coloured resin or a thin veneer can cover a stain that bleaching cannot lighten, and neither changes with whitening afterwards.
Covers the stain
Products from a pharmacy, online or a salon are not advised by the NHS.1
| Home trays | In-office | Bonding or veneers | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it involves | Gel in fitted trays, 2 to 6 weeks 1 | Gel in one visit of 1 to 2 hours 1 | Covering the tooth with resin or a thin shell |
| What the research found | Same sensitivity as in-office 2 | Light added no extra colour change 4 | See the bonding and veneer pages |
| Main limit | Fades, about 3 years with advice 1 | Fades, about 3 years with advice 1 | The tooth is altered or covered |
Where the whitening is done matters less than whether the stain can be bleached at all.
04 Procedure
Every mouth is different, so your visit may differ. This is the usual order. Nothing starts until you have agreed, and whitening is only suggested once the dentist has examined your teeth and gums.
The examination decides whether whitening can work, and how.
The dentist asks how long your teeth have looked yellow, what you drink, whether you smoke, and whether you have tried whitening before.
The dentist checks for decay, worn areas, cracks and gum disease, because the NHS says whitening is for healthy teeth and gums.1
Natural teeth stained from outside can be lightened, while crowns, fillings and veneers do not change colour.15
Plaque and surface stain are removed with a professional clean, which may change how yellow the teeth look before any bleaching.
You talk through home trays, in-office whitening and the alternatives, with the strength of gel and what the research says about it.23
The gel is applied, with the gums protected, either in the clinic or in trays you wear at home.1
A check shows the result, any sensitivity and whether fillings or crowns now stand out against the lighter teeth.5
05 Aftercare
Your dentist will give you written instructions, and those come first.
Sensitivity to cold or sweet food and drink is a known side effect of whitening, and so are sore gums or throat.1 Tell your dentist if it is troublesome.
Coffee, tea, red wine and smoking stain teeth, so the result lasts longer if you cut down.1
Brush with fluoride toothpaste twice a day, clean between your teeth daily, and keep your regular check-ups.
Call the clinic on 098115 01995 if your gums or throat stay sore, if sensitivity is severe or lasts, or if you see white patches on the gums. If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, or swelling that spreads across your face or neck, call 112 or go to a hospital emergency department.
Cut back on the things that stain, and tell your dentist about any soreness or sensitivity.
06 Limits and risks
Whitening is a light treatment, but it does not suit every stain or every person. These are situations where another plan may be better:
In these cases treatment of the teeth and gums first, bonding, veneers or a wait may be better.
Sensitivity and sore gums. Sensitivity to cold or sweet food and drink is a known side effect, and a meta-analysis found no difference in sensitivity between at-home and in-office bleaching.12
Stronger gel is not clearly better. A review of 14 studies with 649 patients found that 35% hydrogen peroxide caused more sensitivity than 6% to 20% gels, and that the lower strengths changed the colour more on instrument measurement, with no difference in the shade patients saw.3
Light may add nothing. A meta-analysis of 21 trials found that adding light to in-office bleaching gave no improvement in colour change and did not change sensitivity.4
The effect fades, and products vary. It may last around three years, and the NHS says pharmacy, online and salon products may harm the teeth and gums.1 Bleaching can also affect fillings and other restorations in laboratory studies.5
A good plan names these limits before treatment starts, and an examination comes first.
07 Your visit
At your first visit, a dentist at Orion Dental Clinic asks how long your teeth have looked yellow, what you eat and drink, whether you smoke and whether you have used whitening products. You are asked about your health, pregnancy and any sensitivity.
The dentist examines your teeth and gums, checks any fillings, crowns or veneers, and takes X-rays where needed. You then talk through whether whitening can help, which method suits you, what the research says and what the alternatives are, and nothing starts until you agree.
The first visit is to find out why your teeth look yellow, and whether whitening is the right answer.
08 Why this clinic
