Dental concerns · Greater Kailash 1, Delhi
Most dental problems start small, and knowing which ones can wait and which cannot makes the first decision easier. At Orion Dental Clinic, a dentist in Greater Kailash 1 (GK 1), South Delhi, this guide sorts common concerns into urgent and routine, and sends you to a page for each one, including pain, gums, breath, injuries, missing teeth and how your smile looks, in plain language.
Care is planned by Dr Anupam Sinha (BDS, MDS) and Dr Natalia DeSilva (BDS, MDS). If you have swelling that spreads, or trouble swallowing or breathing, call 112 or go to a hospital now. Ask as many questions as you need.
These statements come from NHS patient information, listed at the end of the page. They are general, and your dentist will explain what applies to you.

Quick answer
Dental concerns at Orion Dental Clinic in Greater Kailash 1, Delhi range from toothache, bleeding gums and bad breath to chips, missing teeth and worries about how a smile looks. Dr Anupam Sinha and Dr Natalia DeSilva see them. Swelling that spreads, or trouble swallowing or breathing, is an emergency.
01 Overview
The NHS gives clear rules for when a dental problem cannot wait. Toothache that lasts more than two days, or does not ease with painkillers, or comes with a fever, pain on biting, red gums, a bad taste or a swollen cheek or jaw, needs a dentist.1 A dental abscess needs urgent treatment and will not clear up on its own.2 Sore, swollen gums with loose or falling-out teeth, ulcers or red patches, or a lump in the mouth or on the lip, also need urgent attention.3
Other problems can wait for a booked visit. The NHS describes a chipped, cracked or broken tooth as non-urgent, and advises keeping any broken piece in milk or saliva.4 Gums that bleed when you brush, bad breath that lasts beyond a few weeks of self-care, and teeth that look stained or crooked are all worth a dental check, but not an emergency.35
The groups below point to a page for each concern, with what causes it, what you can do at home and what the dentist can do. Treatments are covered on separate pages, and the emergency page has first aid for the urgent ones.
Urgent signs are about swelling that spreads, trouble breathing or swallowing, an abscess and knocked-out teeth, and almost everything else can be booked.
02 Candidacy
This sorting follows the NHS pages. If you are not sure, call us and describe what is happening.
Pain with swelling, fever or trouble swallowing or breathing is for the same day, and the rest can be booked.
03 Options
Each concern has its own page, written from NHS information and systematic reviews.
Read about tooth pain, a painful wisdom tooth, a broken or knocked-out tooth and jaw pain, which can have causes outside the mouth. See dental emergency for what to do first.
Urgent signs first
Read about bleeding gums, swollen gums, loose teeth and bad breath. The NHS says gum disease is very common and should be checked by a dentist.3
Gum disease is common 3
Read about yellow teeth, crooked teeth, gaps between teeth and missing teeth, and how each can be treated.
Appearance and function
Two more concerns have their own pages: sensitive teeth, and dental anxiety, for people who put off visits because of fear.
Start with the concern that is bothering you most, and every page ends with a way to book.
04 Procedure
Every case is individual, so your visit may differ. This is the usual order.
The first visit is for finding the cause, and any urgent problem is dealt with first.
You say what is bothering you, how long it has been going on and whether you have swelling, a fever or a bad taste, and we say how soon you should be seen.12
The dentist asks about your health, medicines, allergies and earlier dental work, which can change what is suitable.
The dentist looks at the teeth, gums and bite, tests the tooth if there is pain, and takes X-rays where needed.
Decay, a crack, infection, gum disease and grinding are common causes of dental pain, and the dentist works out which applies.1
If there is an abscess it is drained, usually under local anaesthetic, before anything else.2
You talk through the choices, including doing nothing for now, and nothing starts without your agreement.
A check shows whether the problem has settled, and a plan for regular check-ups keeps small problems small.
05 Aftercare
These are the NHS self-care steps. They ease symptoms, but they do not treat the cause.15
Ibuprofen or paracetamol can help, within the recommended dose. Children under 16 should not take aspirin.12
Eat soft foods, avoid chewing on a sore tooth, use a soft toothbrush, and clean between your teeth daily, but not around a sore tooth.12
Keep any broken piece of tooth in milk or saliva and bring it to the dentist.4
Do not smoke, and avoid very hot, very cold or sweet food and drink while a tooth is sore.1
Call the clinic on 098115 01995 if you have toothache lasting more than two days, a swollen cheek or jaw, a fever, a bad taste, or very sore swollen gums with loose teeth. Go to a hospital emergency department if you have swelling around the eye or neck, or swelling that makes it hard to breathe, speak or swallow, and ask someone to take you rather than driving yourself.
Home care eases things for a while, and the dentist treats the cause.
06 Limits and risks
Most dental concerns are in the teeth and gums, but a few are not. These are situations where a doctor is needed:
In these cases a doctor or a hospital emergency department is the right next step, and the dentist will say so.
Waiting makes problems worse. The NHS says a dentist can treat the cause of toothache and prevent the problem from getting worse, and advises booking if it lasts over two days.1
An abscess will not clear on its own. It needs urgent dental treatment, and swelling that affects breathing or swallowing needs a hospital emergency department.2
Gum disease can lead to loose or lost teeth. The NHS lists bad breath, a bad taste, shrinking gums, loose or falling-out teeth and a dental abscess among its complications.3
Some causes are not dental. The NHS lists dry mouth, tonsillitis and acid reflux among the medical causes of bad breath.5
A good dentist tells you when the problem is not in the mouth.
07 Your visit
At your first visit, a dentist at Orion Dental Clinic asks what is bothering you, how long it has gone on and whether anything makes it better or worse. You are asked about your health, medicines, allergies and any dental work you have had.
The dentist examines your teeth and gums, tests the tooth if there is pain and takes X-rays where needed. You then talk through what the problem is, what the choices are, what the risks are and how long treatment would take, and you can ask any question.
The first visit is for finding the cause, and you decide each step.
08 Why this clinic
You meet the doctors who examine you, and you can ask them what they have found and what they have ruled out.
